picks the best apps for expectant and new parents
There’s an app for that
First Words
(Android)
A bright and colourful app that uses vibrant
photos to teach children their first words in the
form of flashcards. Part of a series of similar
educational apps (First Animals, First Colours,
First Vehicles etc).
Breaking Dad
(Apple, Android)
An app with a very clear target audience in
mind: first-time dads. The focus of the content
is mainly on “Baby Stuff” and “Can She Eat”
(referring to mum-to-be) and is written in a
tongue-in-cheek style that should appeal to
most men.
BabyList – Baby Registry
(Apple, Android)
Everyone knows a newborn baby requires a lot
of items. Luckily most friends and family want to
help by pitching in and showering you with gifts.
This is a fantastic app that lets you create a gift
registry with links found anywhere on the web
and share them with loved ones.
GlowBaby
(Apple, Android)
A nicely designed baby journal app packed with
features to help new parents keep track of every
aspect of baby’s life. From practical ones (e.g.
feeding, bottles, poos, sleeps) to sentimental
milestones such as first steps and first words.
Baby Flashcards: 12+ Months
(Android)
Once your baby has mastered the first basic
words, she will be hungry to learn more.
Flashcards are a great way of helping little
ones learn new words or even learn a second
language. Each card (from six categories) has a
clearly pronounced word and the navigation is
simple enough to allow toddlers to operate the
app alone.
Pregnancy+
(Apple, Android)
Pregnancy+ is an extremely comprehensive app
that includes practical tools for mum – such as
the weight and appointment tracker – as well as
photos, videos and articles about every stage of
baby’s development.
Contraction Monitor – Contractions
Counter and Timer
(Apple)
There are numerous pregnancy journal apps
that include a contraction timer, but when the
timer is actually needed, chances are it won’t be
mum who will be measuring the contractions.
This app is simple to use, intuitive and available
for the Apple watch for even easier monitoring.
New Mom
(Apple, Android)
The advantage of this app over other exercise
apps is the low memory required. The routines
are demonstrated through illustrated videos
rather than actual films resulting in much lighter
apps. Choose between 5 minute (with baby),
10, 15 or 20-minute workout routines.
Tweekaboo
(Apple, Android)
An online pregnancy journal and baby diary,
Tweekaboo connects with your Facebook,
Instagram and Dropbox to create a timeline of
images and comments that can be printed into
books and shared with family and friends.
Mommy Meds
(Apple, Android)
This app is far from beautiful, however, it offers
pregnant and breastfeeding mothers valuable
information on what medications are safe and
which should be avoided. It is a great resource
while travelling as it claims to cover some
20,000 medications.
