of the famed Lambeau Field, home of
the NFL Team, the Green Bay Packers.
As part of our thirst for Americana,
my husband sneaks into nearly every
stadium he can. This time, however, he
had thoughtfully booked us all onto the
official stadium tour. My daughters were
totally uninterested in what was a riveting
tour, but managed to be placated by a
set of cheerleading pompoms.
Nestled on the peninsula between
Green Bay and Lake Michigan is Door
County, and the penultimate leg of our
journey. The area is beautiful and you
can see why it goes by the moniker
of ‘Cape Code of the Midwest’. There
are numerous towns dotted around
the peninsula and we chose to base
ourselves at Gordon Lodge in Baileys
Harbor. We spent a blissful few days
here, kayaking on Lake Michigan
and riding bikes through the nearby
forest. We also got the chance to stroll
through the State Parks, visit the odd
lighthouse and enjoy leisurely lunches
in the picturesque towns. Door County
is famous for its bountiful cherry trees.
Unfortunately, we missed the cherry
picking season by about a week but
made up for it by chowing down on
cherry pie and sweet fruit wine.
Our last few days had us winding
back down the shore of Lake Michigan
towards Chicago. We couldn’t leave
Wisconsin without a final bit of
waterpark action and spent our last
night at the Blue Harbor Resort in
Sheboygan. After a morning of whizzing
down the watersides and around the
lazy river, we were sufficiently exhausted
to embark on the 15-hour flight back to
Hong Kong.
Perhaps travelling through The
Badger State doesn’t rank high up
on your idea of a US family road trip.
However, Wisconsin was easily one
of my favourite vacations, with the
huge amount of attractions on offer,
combined with the natural beauty of
Lake Michigan. In fact, how could you
not fall in love with a State that is famed
for cheese and waterparks!
