Children experience motion sickness more often than adults.
Early symptoms of motion sickness include hot flushes,
dribbling and paleness. Several medicines are available
both over the counter and by prescription – to reduce
or prevent symptoms. Anti-sickness remedies containing
hyoscine are the most effective medicines for motion
sickness, and there are several brands that contain it and
come in a soluble form for children.
To help keep motion sickness at bay, keep motion to a
minimum. For example, sit over the wing of a plane or on deck
in the middle of a boat. Avoid heavy meals before and during
travelling. It may be a good idea to avoid spicy or fatty food.
On long journeys, take a break and get some fresh air, drink
some cold water and take a short walk. Ginger can improve
motion sickness in some people, and can be taken in ginger
biscuits, ginger tea or as tablets before a journey.

Create a safe flying experience for your youngest
travellers so you can relax and enjoy your final
destination.
Holding a child on an adult’s lap is not the safest
option. Whenever possible, buy a child his own seat to
ensure an approved car seat can be used.
Infants and toddlers on aeroplanes are safest in a car
seat with a harness. A child who rides in a car seat on
the ground should ride in that car seat on a plane.
Make sure your child’s car seat is labelled safe for air
travel.
Children who have outgrown car seats should
sit directly on the aeroplane seat and, like all
passengers, keep the lap belt buckled across their
thighs or hips.

Did you ring in 2013 with resolutions to get healthy? Often, the toughest thing
about exercise isn’t doing it, it’s fitting it in. If you can’t swing a 30-minute walk
every day, plus about 30 minutes a week of strength training, don’t worry.
Breaking your activity into ten-minute chunks spread throughout the day
works just as well for your weight, waist-management and health. Just be
sure to do 30 minutes total. Here are a few simple ways to get started:
Pace, don’t sit, when you’re talking on the phone. Do an extra lap around
the office when you go to get coffee. Put your new exercise bike in front
of the TV. Take a ten-minute break every chance you
get and walk or climb two flights of stairs.
