Orla always knew she wanted to live in Hong
Kong. Just as soon as she realised that she wasn’t
destined for the USA, she had no doubt that the
Fragrant Harbour was the place for her. Except
for that time she left and moved back to Ireland.
That was a blip. But once she moved back here
again, she knew she’d be here for good. Until
she got the notion to move herself and her family
to England for five years. Another blip. But once she heard Hong Kong’s
third and final call, she moved them all back again. And this time she’s

Vanessa Thai
Growing up in Australia where she studied
Optometry at the University of Melbourne,
Vanessa Thai came to Hong Kong in 2008. A
surprise wedding in Mexico, two babies later,
she’s thrilled to call this exciting city home. With
over 12 years of experience, she has worked in
various capacities at Hong Kong Polytechnic
University’s School of Optometry and was one of
51 authors invited to contribute to the global resource on “Optometric Care
within the Public Health Community” in which she co-authored the chapter
on Asia. When not examining eyes, she’s cooking Vietnamese food with her
four-year-old daughter and rescuing her toddler son from doing wild stunts.
