Q
How often should I wash my hair? A
There are typically three major factors to consider when washing your hair: oiliness, dirtiness and hair texture. Here in Hong Kong, the heat must also be taken into consideration.
You can wash your hair as often as you like based on your lifestyle, but I recommend about three times per week. External factors such as smoke, summer heat, humidity and all the styling products and tools we use are harmful to the hair. Washing these away and feeding your hair the essential nutritive elements from shampoos and hair conditioners is actually good for your hair’s health. The right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type and texture will actually add moisture, body and beauty to your hair.
Keep in mind that your hair’s texture changes if you colour it or add any chemical treatment to it. You’ll want to use products designed for your hair’s condition. The length of the hair also needs to be considered: the longer the hair, the less you want to shampoo it. So, if you have dry or normal hair, you should wash it two days a week. If you have oily hair, a daily shampoo might feel good, but you should try to train the hair to be washed only two or three times per week. If you have mixed hair, meaning an oily scalp and dry ends, then I recommend using a good scalp treatment shampoo and washing your hair a maximum of three times a week. Lastly, I recommend changing your shampoo and conditioner each month, alternating between at least two different sets. (Note, however, that, if you’ve done a keratin treatment, like the Brazilian Blowout for example, it’s best to always use the product recommended with the treatment.)
