Look no further for inspiration on caring for our planet –
Angelina Draper
has the perfect app.
There’s an app for that
Save Your Planet Kids
(Apple, Android)
A visually appealing app reachiing toddlers
and preschoolers that teaches them to be
more eco-responsible. After each successful
action (e.g. turn off water when brushing
teeth), three birds appear to sing a (very, very)
happy song.
JouleBug
(Apple, Android)
This app aims to get you and your family and
friends to “make your everyday habits more
sustainable, at work, home, and play.”
Plum’s Photo Hunt
(Apple)
Aimed at six- to nine-year-olds, this award-
winning app gets children out of the house and
on a photo expedition. With categories such as
clouds, unusual weather, trash, animal life (and
many more) there are enough challenges for
children around the globe.
Gro Play – Recycling
(Apple)
This app takes a light-hearted approach to
rubbish collection and recycling that is sure to
appeal to younger audiences.
Sustainable Seafood Guide
(Apple, Android)
According to the information in the app, Hong
Kong imports seafood from 170 countries and
territories. Not all of it, however, is sustainably
caught. The aim of this app (commissioned
by the WWF-HK) is to educate users through
colourful pictures and a traffic light colour
system on what fish is good to eat and which
ones to avoid.
Eco Action Trumps
(Apple, Android coming soon)
Inspired by the traditional game of top trumps,
this virtual deck of trump cards is packed with
information about carbon, energy, money and
resource savings.
Project Noah
(Apple, Android)
Put smartphones to good use and track wildlife
and plants by participating in local and global
“missions.” Users can also upload pictures of
animals they don’t recognise in the “spotting”
section and the community tries to help
identify it.
Earth–Now
(Apple, Android)
This app about the Earth’s vital signs is definitely
one for the older kids and parents, as it is
packed with data tracked by NASA’s satellites
(shown circling a 3-D model of Earth). Data
include sea levels, carbon dioxide, ozone and
water vapour.
Waste Less
(Apple, Android, Windows)
The aim of this app is simple: to make finding
recycling centres across Hong Kong easier.
AQHI
(Apple, Android)
Another app brought to you by the Hong Kong
Environmental Protection Department, this time
broadcasting in real-time the Air Quality Health
Index as reported by three roadside and 12
general monitoring stations. This is an easy way
to introduce children to this type of data as
the information is clearly colour-coded and
grouped in five risk categories.
