April 2016 - page 6

T
his month, in our eco-friendly issue, we are thinking about our wider community – the effect our
actions have on the world and others. It just takes a little thought to avoid being harmful to the
environment, whether that be through unnecessary waste, pollution because of
shipping
our favourite food across the globe
, buying new clothes every other week or
throwing things away before thinking how we might re-use them, sell them or simply pass them
on to a friend. Inside, we have some inspiring ideas on
how to be a greener consumer
.
Because many of us live in small apartments here in Hong Kong, we don’t always have the space we might
like to store items so that we can re-use them another time or save them for when our children decide they
want to play with them again. But because there are many people coming and going in this city, it is a good
place for selling on items we no longer need and buying some second-hand bargains. We should all do more
of this in our neighbourhoods (and teach our kids to recycle their belongings too); it’s fun and a good way to
save on waste
, and, as they say,
“one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!”
And
talking of trash, we also bring you some fantastic ideas to help you reduce yours, by unleashing your creativity
and creating a whole new purpose for plenty of everyday items that might otherwise be consigned to the
recycling bin.
There are two food-related topics that we are asked about a lot – one is,
“Where can I go for
brunch on a Saturday?”
(– could this possibly be because you would like to experience brunch with
your friends instead of with your kids once in a while?!); and the other is,
“What ideas do you have
for healthy snacks?”
(– who doesn’t want to munch on delicious yums that are actually good for us?!)
Our two food-inspired features this month have both these questions covered. So, I do hope you can now
enjoy some
guilt-free snacking
AND some
guilty child-free brunches
.
Happy reading!
