Congratulations
to all the winners!
T
he fifth annual Hong Kong Young Writers
Awards Ceremony was the largest and most
spectacular of the competition’s history. On
30 April, 340 guests including 100 talented
students from schools across Hong Kong, Macau and
China gathered at the fantastic new venue, Ocean View
Court at Cyberport, for this prestigious event.
Before the results were announced, proud parents
and teachers arrived to enjoy the impressive student art
exhibition, and light refreshments. As the event began,
our keynote speaker Nury Vittachi put the guests at
ease and entertained with his effortless combination of
charisma and humour.
While the students eagerly made their way onto
the stage, the winners were declared according to the
categories: cover art, fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
As the trophies were presented, it was evident how
much the competition meant to both our sponsors and
students alike! Our special guest speaker Rob Lilwall
provided insight into this year’s topic by describing
his ambitious expedition from the Gobi Desert to Hong
Kong in 2012.
The team at
Playtimes
was delighted to continue its
support for the different learning abilities section with
three awardees this year. Overall, a record number of
16 winners were announced. Attending schools across
the region, these aspiring young writers ranged from
7 to 16 years of age. The fantastic prizes, specially
provided by Faber-Castell, made this year’s awards
ceremony something extra-special for the students.
Prizes from Bookazine and NTK Academic Group meant
no shortlisted young writer was left empty-handed.
After the winners for the individual groups
were announced, it was time to present the grand
prize winner. As silence filled the room, Alvin Yu of
St. Joseph’s College was deservedly named the 2014
Hong Kong Young Writer of the Year.
