A
s a parent, selecting a school
for your child is one of the
most important decisions you
can make. A quick online
search about schools will generate a
variety of checklists, pointers and must-
dos. But at the end of the day, it is about
finding a school that is a good fit for your
child.
What is a good fit?
A good-fit school has the same goals
of academic and extracurricular
achievements you have set for your
child. It should also reflect the family
and community values that you
consider important. In addition to what
you want as parents, it is important for
your child to be involved in the selection
process, for them to participate in their
own learning.
Common considerations involve
your child’s needs in terms of structure,
learning styles, language acquisition
and their need for challenging and
creative work. Location is especially

important for young children, while
older children can benefit from a
boarding environment where they
experience independence and learn
how to self-manage, often for the first
time.
There’s no substitute for a
school visit!
Your child will be spending most of their
waking hours learning at school, and
the best way to know whether they will
enjoy it is to bring them for a school visit.
Be sure to visit all the schools on your list,
if you can. A physical visit is the only way
to get a feel of the school’s climate and
the overall sense that the school is the
dynamic, engaging, inspirational and
safe learning environment that you and
your child are looking for.
Curriculum choice
The approach should be student-
centred and challenging enough to
develop each student’s strengths and
passion for learning. The International
Baccalaureate (IB) is one of the most
respected and sought after frameworks
in the world, not only supporting the
knowledge, skills, attitudes and learning
requirements of our future leaders but
also supporting the needs of globally-
mobile families.
