Q
What are your tips and advice
for eczema sufferers?
A
With eczema, an inflammation
of the skin, the sufferer typically
experiences itching, small papules
(pimples) and vesicles (fluid-filled blisters),
along with a burning or oozing sensation,
and the skin can become crusty and
scaly. Many people suffer from this
skin condition, which because of its
sometimes unsightly appearance can
cause a loss of confidence, especially
during summer months when we’re
wearing lighter clothing.
Sun-lovers with eczema should avoid
exposure to harsh sunlight at all times
and be particularly cautious because
sunscreen may not be suitable to apply to
broken skin. Make-up can be a challenge
for suffers as ingredients in some
products may trigger outbreaks, and
even a facial or massage may need to be
avoided since rubbing the skin can cause
greater irritation.
There is no single test that can
determine the cause of eczema but
stress can elevate the severity of the
inflammation. A dry climate, some foods
such as nuts and dairy products, irritants
such as detergents, lotions and creams,
and environmental factors such as smoke,
dust and pollen can trigger eczema. There
is no one-size-fits-all cure for eczema,
unfortunately. Those who develop eczema
in their childhood may continue to suffer
as adults, while for some it may disappear
over time. Eczema might flare up only
in response to specific environmental

factors, while for others this can be a daily
struggle and a lifelong concern.
For those dealing with this condition,
there are ways to keep to it at bay. Using
non-soapy cleansers, special types of
ultra-mild moisturizers for sensitive and
inflamed skin (it is important to keep skin
moisturized), and barrier creams with
glycerin are all recommended. Avoiding
excessive sweating, managing stress
levels, wearing cotton and natural fibre
clothing, and even controlling one's diet to
avoid foods that might trigger inflammation
are also suggested. For those who need
to seek medical help, doctors will
prescribe corticosteroid creams,
antibiotics and antihistamines, among
others, although medications should be
used with caution as they can thin the skin
with continuous and regular use.
