Playtimes May 2014 - page 6

I
love moving house, which helps explain why the past 20 years have included 15 different addresses
in ten different cities and four different countries. While I understand why so many people find it
stressful (and, indeed, I too find it unnerving),
I love the adventure a move brings
.
First, you go through your current situation – wardrobes, cupboards, boxes that are still unopened from
the last move – and figure out what’s working for you and what should be tossed. Then, when you arrive
at your new home and you have to figure out where to put everything that made the cut, you have another
chance to decide how – and if – things really belong in your new life.
Of course,
the best part is the possibility
– the
chance to reinvent
and
recreate your routines
,
your wardrobe
,
your career
, and
reimagine what
you want for the next chapter
. Some things will stay the same – your values and your family,
for example. But other things are bound to change – the shorter hairstyle and flip-flop-focused wardrobe
that worked for me in Bangkok just didn’t feel right in Hong Kong. The career I enjoyed in Chicago (and the
ridiculous amount of hours and travel that went with it), just didn’t work in my new life in Asia.
Whether you’re a serial mover like I am, or whether you’ve just experienced your first relocation,
I hope you’ll find something of interest in this issue.
