The Gobi Desert
Island School, Winnie Siu, Fiction: Group 4
A
n eerie song disrupts the silent land of the Gobi Desert. There, the wind howls and
sings as they dance past towering dunes of sands. Mountains of golden fine grains
rise and fall like the smooth waves of the ocean, whilst mist of dusts roll across the
land covered with lush green shrubs. The soft caress of the wind left traces of its
presence behind with delicate lines that ripple the sand dunes. Hovering in the clear cerulean sky,
the golden eagle cries and stretches out its board majestic wings; its piercing amber eyes roam
the wide stretched land intensively in search for its next prey as it soars and glides through the
Yolyn-Am valley.
The narrow mysterious valley cuts deeply into the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountain like
a river. Sheltered by the protective embrace of the rugged cliff walls, the valley is a winter
phenomena in the middle of the Gobi Desert, as it remains unreachable from the glare of the
scorching red sun. The rocky ground is draped with a silky sheet of snow like a blanket with blue
veins of ices all year-round. During the winter, glistering icicles of water droplets hang in mid air
from the frozen grandiose waterfall. Glowing softly, the glossy surface of the glaciers shine like
the gem stones emerald and sapphire in the morning light, and thick layer of ice forms natural
bridges as it gracefully arched out.
Pacing stealthily on the freezing valley floor, the Mongolian snow leopard blends in perfectly
with the snow-covered cliff with its thick white and smoky-gray coats dotted with black spots and
rosettes. The large cat ears twitching with the slightest sound as it hunts for games in the winter
wonderland. A flock of Marco Polo sheep with large spiral horns hikes up the rocky cliff where
the green, rich vegetation is located.
Another beautiful sight in the Gobi Desert is the Khuvsgul Lake, which is located at the foot
of the eastern Sayan Moutains in Taiga. The large voluminous freshwater lake supports the nearby
vast forest with rich minerals, allowing the healthy growth and development of the lush green
trees and grass. The transparent water reveals the enormous depth of the ancient lake and the
various creatures that reside in it. Bending slightly in the wind, the grass covers the slopping hills
and clearings; the air smells refreshing and sweet with the aroma of the wild flowers that grow on
the mountainside. The breathtaking scenery and the atmosphere of the lake are tranquil and quiet
with the occasional whistle of the breezes and splashes of water. The mask deer that gather around
the lake to quench its thirst with the pure cool water disturbs the grass blades, whilst a pack of
wolves lounge in the forest for the cool shades cast with the canopy of leaves.
In the northern Central of the Gobi Desert is the Mongol capital of Karakorum, a large
territory surrounded with by strong walls of stones. There, some of the temples and ruins of
the Mongolian still remains standing through the many decades. Although the ruins have been
eroding, and beaten down of the winds and ruins, its skillful architectural construction can still
be seen. The temples’ ruddy colored roof has four corners arch up towards the sky and held up by
strong thick pillars. Buddhist dressed in robes of red and yellow, holds a string of beads for prayer
as a group of them kneel down in front of holy figure statues.
The Gobi Desert seems endless as it stretches on the horizon, and despite its extreme
temperature, it is the home to hundreds of exotic animals and vegetation. The massive desert also
