conflicted on the discovery. This could either be the biggest thing in their lives or just the eggs of
a simple bird. However, if they were a bird eggs how come they had just been discarded their like
that and how long had they been there for all the sand and stone to pile up on top of them. There
were too many questions, questions they couldn’t answer.
They would have to wait until they got back home. For now they would be kept inside the
bags their camels carried with them wherever they went. The specimens perched on the yellow
furry humps of the camels. The final analysis would take place back home in the laboratory. The
pristine laboratory, they would use microscopes and do tests and research their findings. Andrews
smiled to himself, realizing how different his world would be if the eggs contained something
truly amazing inside. It was like opening a clam to find a pearl, you just had to patient and hope
you found the right thing. Or this could be one of the most useless findings of his life and could
completely ruin his reputation.
The whole hike back through the Gobi Desert all Andrews could think about was his future.
He ignored the flaming cliffs as they disappeared into the horizon, their orange peaks no longer
visible. He ignored the talking of his co-workers their mindless chatter was irritating. He ignored
the sandy wind as it brushed against him and the sand that blew into his eyes. He missed out
on the sunset and watching the sky turns from blue to different shades of pink orange and then
black. He didn’t watch the stars in the sky that night either. His co-workers did, they watched the
meteors soar across the sky pretending to be shooting stars. The stars glimmered in the sky that
night shining brighter than they ever had before.
However, that night when Andrews went to sleep there were no dreams, nothing to relax,
nothing but nightmares haunting him. The fear of loosing everything he had been working
towards, the fear of never going on another expedition to the Gobi Desert. The fear of never
seeing a sight so beautiful or seeing a place so peaceful tore him up inside. He hoped and hoped
for successful results and tried to forget about his worries for a few hours to rest his mind and
body. Everyone knew that wouldn’t happen.
