hen New Zealand-born Karin and American-
born Sean Looram and their two sons, James,
seven, and Daniel, five, sold their Happy Valley
apartment, little did they know they would
stumble across an old ’70s-style apartment that would
comfortably fit their family. “I love where my apartment is
because it’s peaceful and the views are fantastic, with both
mountain and city views across Hong Kong. I love the useable
space, too. It feels like you are in the country park, yet it’s
really close to Causeway Bay and Central,” says Karin.
After living in Hong Kong for nearly 17 years, both Karin
and Sean have seen huge changes in this city. “The Hong
Kong of today is totally different to the Hong Kong I knew 17
years ago with regards to interiors. Back then there were really
only three basic stores to source furniture and, if you didn’t get
it from those stores, then you went to Macau,” Karin says.
Nowadays, thanks to a whole new interior shopping
palette, Karin sources her pieces from Halo, Mirth and
Tree, and then also looks abroad to lifestyle stores like
Anthropologie and Target in the US. For art, her go-to places
