Gobi Race
The Chinese Foundation Secondary School, Chan Ching Ki, Fiction: Group 4
J
oyce, Kelsi and Troy joined the Gobi Race, which is a race against your limit, a race
against death.
‘Alright, everyone! ‘Said Ben, the judge.
‘Welcome to the enormous Gobi Desert! All of you should listen carefully. Follow the
instructions below or you may die in the desert. The rules of the game are: First, all of you have to
stay in the desert for 3 days! Second, you cannot seek help from the locals. Third, you need to build
your tent on or before 6:00pm every night, because Gobi desert can be very, very cold at night.
Well, you know, it’s like negative 10 to 20 degree Celsius at night. So, you are recommended to stay
at your tent. Fourth, we need to find at least 2 things, which can only be found here, such as black-
tailed gazelles, marbled polecats or Bactrian camels to mention some. Last, in case you cannot
find any food in the desert, you can eat these. Each of you will have one big red bag containing
all the food you need. Energy bars, chocolates… all sorts of food are here. But you are supposed to
find food you own in these 3 days. Once you eat one of the foods in your red bag, marks will be
deducted. Perhaps, it is just your last resort for food. Alright? Any problems? ‘said Ben.
‘Nah!’ said Joyce, Kelsi and Troy confidently.
‘Alright! Great! So wish you all the best! I’ll see you three days later! Enjoy!’ said Ben cheerfully.
‘Bye! Ben!’ they said in a cautiously optimistic way.
‘Well, listen. Those rules don’t mention that we can’t work together as one, right?’ said Kelsi.
‘Yeah! And so..?’ said Troy sarcastically.
‘Ugh, come on! Let’s work together, can we ?’ said Kelsi.
‘Um, it’s ok. I think. At least, we all are not familiar with the Gobi Desert.’ Joyce nodded her
head while saying so.
‘Wo! I do not agree! Aren’t we competing to be champions? The rules didn’t mention that
we can do so, can we? It’s just 3 days and you will not die! Come on! If you are hungry, you can
simply eat these food in the red bag, can’t you? Come on! Don’t be childish!’ said Troy impatiently.
‘Alright, ok! You’re gonna work on your own. Joyce and I will work together, brave people. ‘
said Kelsi angrily.
‘Okay! Two little bird-brained kids! Bye! And I am going to tell Ben that you violate the rule!
A big goodbye here! Muah !Muah! Muah!’ said Troy sarcastically.
‘What did you say ?’ said Kelsi furiously. Kelsi wanted to hold Troy’s neck.
‘Stop and calm down! You two. Well, we really should go together! We may not follow each
other for the whole day. But at least, we should build our tents in certain places. So, we can find
the others in case something happens. ‘ said Joyce.
‘Well, you may be right!’ Troy agreed.
‘You see? I told you! But sorry, what did you say just then ?’ said Kelsi in a sarcastic way.
‘You! Well, I am not going to talk with someone who is pea-brained. ‘ said Troy.
‘Did you two hear me? I said stop arguing !’ said Joyce. ‘ Alright, the tents are really heavy,
aren’t they? We’d better set our tents first. Perhaps, we can treat it as a “land mark” in case we get
lost.’ Said Joyce.
‘Yes, certainly. You are smart, Joyce.’ Troy smiled.
