Elders of Tribe of Endless Sand.
“Ah!” He cried, startled, galloping towards the entrance of the cave, not looking back.
Chapter 3
Iris couldn’t believe the next few months flew by so quickly. Hugh grew stronger, his head
held high and his shoulders broad, but still, the left leg limped and dragged in the sand. Horns
sprouted from his head. Hugh was no longer a little calf. Rhys grew steadily strict. Realizing the
strength of his son, Rhys began to train Hugh, faster harder better. Hugh worked hard in the sun
with his father, laughed at and scolded for failing. He was watched by Skylar’s offspring, Camilla
and Carrott.
The cream lithe figure of Camilla was sitting comfortably, her green eyes shimmering as she
watched. beside her brother Carrott, who had a more darker shade of brown.
“Hey! Hugh!” Camilla said one afternoon, in the blazing hot sun. The older gazelle sat,
exhausted, by the curious gazelle’s side. “Teach me how to buck and kick and rear!”
Carrott rolled his eyes, laughing. Carrott, unlike Camilla, was a little older, and Hugh’s best
friend. The adult gazelles disregarded Hugh for his left leg, but his friends were more friendly.
Carrott strolled over and smiled.
“She’s been watching you all the time.”
Hugh smiled back. His eyes found the strong shoulders of Carrott, unscarred by anything
limp. Hugh sighed, but Carrott heard it.
“Your getting better, you know.” He said, looking over at Rhys. “I don’t know why he works
you so hard, though…”
Hugh’s thoughts were interrupted by the scuffles in the sand as Camilla bounded over. “Hi hi
hi hi!”
Hugh blinked. “Hi Camilla. How is Skylar?”
“She’s awesome!”
Hugh laughed. His laugh trailed off as he saw his mother talking with Rhys, a dark expression
on her face. “Er, excuse me guys.”
Hugh walked slowly to the cave, his limp leg more obvious to himself then when he was
young. Behind him, he thought he heard whispers and more scuffles, but ignored it.
Reaching the cave, Hugh noticed then when Iris saw him, she smiled at him, but Hugh was not
convinced. Rhys, however, was still frowning.
“Hey, er, Mum, Dad. So, tell me, er, whats up?”
The cave was empty, except for the old male gazelle that Hugh learnt to be Albus. Albus was
asleep, though Hugh thought he saw him twitch.
Rhys frowned at him.
“Your mother has been discussing with me. It is none of your business.” He said in a deep,
stern voice. Hugh glared at him in his mind. Iris, however, gave a weird little shake.
“No, its Hugh, Rhys, he’s your son…”
“He shouldn’t know.”
“I think he should.”
“I’m alive, you know!”
Hugh was up on his hooves, looking at them both. Rhys raised slowly-Albus and the other
