The Great Wall of China
Ng, Jehiah Lee, 10, Group 2: Non-Fiction, North Point Methodist Primary School
ave you ever been to the Great Wall of China? When I first heard about the Great Wall and knew that
it is very long, I imagined that it looked like a black dragon. But in fact, it is a huge construction built
over 2000 years ago!
The Great Wall was built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China. It
stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west. The Great wall is about 8,000 kilometers long,
5-6 meters high and 8-9 meters wide. It is the biggest fortifications in the world and it was made by Chinese
people! I am so proud of being a Chinese.
The Great Wall was built to defend and control the border. There were constructions of watch towers, troop
barracks, garrison stations for defensive purpose. Since it has a long history, there were many legends about the
Great Wall. One famous legend is about a pretty woman called Lady Meng Jian who lived in Qin Dynasty. Her
husband was dead when he was forced to build the Great Wall. Meng Jian’s heart was broken when she went to
visit her husband and learnt his death. She wailed in mourning painfully. As a result, 800 kilometers of the Great
Wall was ruined by her tears.
If I am an architect, I will continue to build the Great Wall until it stretches around the whole earth like
the equator. I also hope that it can reach the moon. I will widen the Great Wall until astronauts can see it in the
space. When my dream comes true, we can go around the world without taking airplane or ships. We can go
around the earth by driving a car or riding a bike!
