There is a Chinese saying, “One shouldn’t have the heart to harm others but guard against harm from
others”. The building of the Great Wall is surely an act of national defense, a kind of self-protection. It shows
political and military wisdom as well as the mighty military and national defense forces of the central empires of
ancient China. Yet, it is of no military or economic use nowadays. However, it has great cultural value to us. It
is a wonderful sightseeing spot which reminds people of the history of China. Though it served as national
defense from invaders, it couldn’t stop internal riots and rebellions. Emperor Qin was deeply hated by his people.
The last few emperors of Han were so weak that they let Xiong Nu take control of China. General NG of the
Ming dynasty opened the gate to let Mogolians invade China and take over the Ming Dynasty. Though many
parts of the Wall were ruined, its wonderful building methods and design remained for archeologists to study
more in depth. It also helps us to appreciate the ingenuity and intelligence of out ancient ancestors.
It is worthwhile putting in every effort to protect and preserve it.
