Greed is the Root of All Evil

am Troy. I have been living here for hundreds of years. I still remember the old days when the Great
pirate captain, Des, and I fought together.We became “The Destroyers”.We were invincible.
One day, Des summoned all the brothers onto the deck and announced, “I have a strong feeling
that a giant pearl is to be found around here - the Pearl River Delta. This pearl has the unique power to
maintain peace and steady weather. Most importantly, you will have eternal life if you eat this pearl."
Des grinned wickedly and took out his Treasure Compass.
“Head to the north!” Des commanded.
As we were heading to the north, the signal from the Treasure Compass became stronger; the waves
became bigger as if they were going to tear us into pieces. The whole ship shook vigorously. No one could
stand straight.
“Have no fear!” Des shouted. Just then, he sprinkled a bottle of “SUPER Metal” into the sea.
All of a sudden, the sea changed to dark green and became as calm as a swamp. Holding the shaking
Treasure Compass, we finally glided into a cave.
It was empty inside except a dragon painting.The dragon’s eyeballs and fins were made of crystal. It
looked so fierce and genuine that it was ready to pounce on us.
“Look! The pearl! In the dragon’s claw!" I yelled.
We started to use our swords and hammers to pick the pearl out. However, no matter how hard we
tried, the pearl didn’t move. Feeling the tiredness of everyone, Des drew a secret symbol in the air and
murmured a few magical words.
Suddenly, a number of grenades suddenly flew towards the dragon painting and exploded!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
This series of loud bangs deafened us. We all felt a gust of wind sweep through the cave. A cracking
sound ripped through the air.The dragon writhed; it swirled around us, and soared so high that the bullets we
fired in alarm could not reach it.
“The sleeping spell!” I learnt it from northern Sir Lanka! I casted the sleeping spell and the dragon was
surrounded by a strong fog. It lost its sight! It choked! “This is a golden opportunity!” I thought. I held my
breath and leapt through to the dragon. I even took the pearl from its claw.
To my astonishment, the dragon used its last breath to breathe fire out of its mouth. The big fire
flame ate all my brothers.They were on fire! I shivered and panicked.
“Pearl! Pearl!”Without a second thought, I swallowed the pearl in my hand.
After all these years, I am still alive. I witnessed all my brothers including Des die. I am still here to
suffer from the use of heavy metal and exhaust gas in the Pearl River Delta.
