Fiction: Group 2
“Dad, you have actually forgotten to give me a birthday gift,” Amy smiled cunningly. Being his dearest
daughter, Amy’s dad would of course promise her everything that she wanted. “Okay, I thought you have
already been so contented after our few days’ trip to Zhuhai. So, what do you want as your birthday gift,
darling?” Amy’s dad responded light-heartedly. “Dad, I want you to help me with this.” Amy showed the
skinny girl’s photo from her phone. “What do you mean, Amy?” he started to show some worry. “Dad,
as you are the owner of all these electronic gaming machines, can you ask your technician to upload the
girl’s photo to the programme of these machines once before the beginning of each game?” Amy continued
to explain that it would be a very effective means for helping the skinny girl to find her parents through the
numerous players every day. Being touched by Amy’s kindness, her dad followed her suggestion.
On the next day, a man approached Amy’s dad after they had uploaded the girl’s photo to the
gaming machines. He was actually the mastermind of the organised crime of children kidnapping. He
requested Amy’s father to pay him $10,000 so that he would provide them with the address of the girl’s
home in Duomen. Out of good-will, Amy’s dad did so as he wanted to honour his promise of giving Amy
her “birthday gift”. Amy and her dad finally brought the girl back home in Duomen.
When the girl’s father saw her girl, he shouted with tears, “Why do you come back? I really could
not afford to raise you. Your mother is pregnant and I will be penalised for having two children. You are a
girl and cannot help me in farming. Please leave as long as they give you food …” Amy could not believe
that she was witnessing the most heart-breaking moment in her life as she was always the princess of her
father.
I, Ah Ping, will be indebted to Amy and his family for their generosity and kindness for the rest of
my life. Having witnessed my most traumatic moment in life, Amy’s father assisted me in matching an
adoptive parent in Hong Kong. I am now living happily with a pair of French couple. The economic
prosperity of the Pearl River Delta may not bring prosperity to every corner of this renowned economic
hub in China. However, I am really one of the few unlucky ones who will be a shining pearl, as I have
committed to save all the lost children in this area when I grow up.
