New Tales of the Pearl River Delta
SKH Chu Oi Primary School, Au, Cherry - 12, Fiction: Group 2
am Cherry. I lived in Macau, where there was an extremely beautiful view of the river. There were
also many cute birds. My house was an old ship. Although it was really old, I had a lot of great
memories with my dear mum and dad in it. I drank, ate and lived here. My ‘house’ was near the
magical Pearl River. Why did I say it was a magical river? It was because my mum and my dad fell in love
on the river. My mum and dad were very busy. They caught fish in the morning and sold fish to the people
who walked near the Pearl River. They even didn’t sleep at midnight because they wanted to catch more
fish. My mum and dad were fish farmers and they had never stepped on the ground although they were
already fifty years old. My dad was weak and he and my mum didn’t know how to swim. My mum was the
daughter of another fish farmer. She met my dad when my dad’s ship crashed onto Mum’s ship and she fell
off the ship. Dad jumped into the river and saved her so Mum loved him but after that, my mum was very
scared of swimming in the river or just touching the river’s water. My mum was a really adorable girl. She
was the most beautiful girl I have seen before when I looked at her old pictures. She liked reading novels
and playing flute with me. I didn’t think I played the flute well but it wasn’t bad. My dad was just an
ordinary man but he was good at catching fishes. So this was my family life.
I am nineteen years old. I was the only daughter of mum and dad. I had a friend too. My only
friend was Batty. It was a very cute dolphin so my dad and mum loved it very much. Batty liked my sister
and we played together and talked together. Even though Batty was actually a little pink dolphin and it
wasn’t a real person, we were best friends. One day, I fell into the water while my mum was sleeping. I was
shocked when I fell into the very cold water so I didn’t shout ‘help!’ loudly. Luckily, Batty saved me itself. It
was really clever. After it helped me to back to the ship, it hit the bottom of the ship to wake my mum up.
My mum and dad and I loved Batty more after this thing happened. Batty was really my best friend but it
was killed by water pollution. I cried for a night when it died. I had never played with other fish since then.
Nowadays, many fish have died because of the bad factories. They made a lot of water pollution so
we couldn’t catch many fish like before. I hated the boss of the ugly factories. My friend Batty and many fish
were killed by them! The boss of these factories was only one man. His name was Mr. Chen.
Although there wasn’t many fish, my family also needed to continue catching fish and selling them
because they didn’t know anything except catching fish. As time went by, there were fewer fish in our area
so my dad needed to go farther away to catch more fish or we would die from hunger.
Unluckily, one time after my dad went out to fish, our ship house was broken because there was a
big thunderstorm. My mum wanted to save me. She died in the river after she put me onto the ground. The
water washed her away. I cried until someone took me to the police that morning. The police took me to
my grandpa’s home. Grandpa took care of me after. My dad went back to the ship to find me and my mum
the next morning and he was very worried. He didn’t know he couldn’t see Mum again. A neighbour saw
dad and brought him to find me. My dad was sad and he cried a day and a night. However, he recovered
from the pain of his wife death quickly. After that, my father said he would try to study more and be a
better person. My dad learned many things now. He could speak English and he could use the computer to
type words too!
I could study in a school near my grandfather’s house happily now. I met many new friends like
Sandra, Ariel and Bonnie. We played together every day in school. We learned many useful things. Sandra
was a beautiful girl and she always had good marks. She was the leader of my group in doing a project of
General Studies. She was a clever student. Ariel was a cute girl. She was always like a primary six student.
She liked reading novel like me so we always had many things to talk. Bonnie was a girl too but she usually
did thing like a boy. She was good at playing table tennis and she liked it too. We always went to Tai Mo
Shan together ~ she ran really fast. We were the best friends and our friendship will be forever. I was shy
