John said “Let’s rest for a second.”
All of them sat panting under the refreshing shade of the shrub which was called a Sauxal
(Wong told them). John handed out a bottle and said “we should just drink a few…” Hiro had
snatched the bottle and drank it in big gulps and finished within seconds. John felt anger wash
over him; He pushed Hiro onto the ground and screamed, “What are you doing? We should drink
a few sips sparingly, so we can save water!” Hiro shook his head and said shamefully “Sorry I
... Couldn’t control myself.” Suddenly the ground shook as if there was an earthquake and the
ground buckled and they fell into darkness.
For the second time that day, John woke up with his head throbbing; he turned on his torch
and scanned the room. He found Hiro and Wong were already awake and scanning the room.
They were in a circular room. Engraved on the door was an ant. They shined their torches into
the room but the saw nothing. John said,” There’s no choice we have to go through that tunnel.”
The others nodded and they walked through the darken tunnel leading to their doom. They found
that the tunnel was wet and slippery; it opened up to room with a podium, next to it was the
exit !But their eyes strayed to the podium that was full to the brim with jewels, rubies, diamonds
and a green stone that was jade. Wong starred at awe and walked slowly towards the mountain
of treasure, John and Hiro stayed put and John had read enough adventure books to know that it
was a trap. Wong walked nearer and nearer, holding out his hand to touch it “No! Wong, do not
touch it!” screamed Hiro. Wong turned with a look of anger that John had never seen before. He
screamed “Shut up! You just want it all for yourselves! But it’s mine, mine!” Wong sprang forward
and took handfuls of gold and stuffed them into his pockets.
Suddenly, a rumble shook through the tunnel and a trapdoor appeared on the podium and
Wong fell through it, John jumped forward and grabbed Wong’s hand. He saw that beneath Wong’s
feet was a mass of red ants that were crawling onto the wall struggling to get to their would-be
prey. John struggled to lift him up but Wong was too heavy even with Hiro‘s help. Wong was
screaming “Help, I don’t want to die young!” The ants were already crawling on his shoes and
jeans. Wong screamed in pain as the ants started biting through his jeans, John pulled with his
muscles straining and dragged him onto the ledge, while Hiro used his torch to brush off the
remaining ants. Wong laughed and scrambled away from the pit of crawling ants, “Whoa! That was
close.” “You nearly pulled both of us down into that pit!” said John angrily, “Just because of some
stupid coins!” When they thought that they were safe, the ground rumbled and the floor cracked
open; and Wong-Long was knocked into the pit. Hiro stared open mouthed at the place where Wong
used to stand, and then John grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him towards the exit.
They ran out of the underground tunnel and found themselves under the hot sunlight; Hiro
was shivering with fear, “I … could have saved him, I...”
He broke down into sobs. John saw just about 300 meters from them was a patch of green with
a blue lake inside the surrounding trees. He shouldered his backpack and said “We’ll camp in that
place for the night; we still have enough supplies for 5 days.” Then he took Hiro’s hand and pulled
him up. John cut some branches and leaves, then tied some rope to make a tent and set out to
find the water source, he trudged for 5 minutes and saw a pond that was full of water. He opened
his bottle and filled it till it was full to the brim. Then he walked back to the camp and gave the
bottle to Hiro; they didn’t speak but sat quietly on the ground. Slowly they both fell asleep.
Moments later, they woke up with a sound like a wolf howling, John rubbed his eyes and
found himself staring at the ghost of Wong, he was glowing with a red aura and parts of his
