HKYWA 2014 Online Anthology (Fiction 3-6) - page 718

With an inevitable curiosity, the kids put on thick down jackets and ran out.
‘That is incredible…
‘Fantastic…
‘Unbelievable…’
Above their heads, was a sea of stars, blinking and flashing, up at the zenith. They seemed to be
so close, but when you tried to grab them, they were so far away. The sea of stars was in patterns,
with different horoscopes swimming in the sea. The Bear, Leo, Sagittarius, Taurus…Shining like
diamonds, turning the deep dark night into light blue, the color when the sun just woke.
Witnessing this moment, the whole team, including the big ones and the young ones, were
overjoyed. All their frustration, disappointment and bitterness evaporated and floated out on the
sea of stars. With another gust of wind, they were out of sight. When they looked carefully on the
beautiful scene above them, it seemed that, the sea of stars was conveying a message to them…
‘Life is just like an exploration of the Gobi Desert. We may face a lot of extreme challenges
and difficulties. They steal our sense, to be satisfied by everything we have got. They blend
our bright eyes, forcing us to miss out on the beautiful side of nature. They set a tall barrier,
exploiting their courage to dare, stepping out of their comfort zones and being independent…Then
we are not living, but sleepwalking…Cheer Up! Open your eyes and catch the elegant moment,
scenery and memory. There is always untouched beauty around you, even in the most extreme
place on this planet…the Gobi Desert.’
One night, is enough to change the whole mood and pace of human beings. Picking them up from
the jungle, rescuing them from drowning, or, pushing them forward on a deadly desert exploration…
‘Look! Are those black-tailed gazelles?’ the thin boy yelled with enthusiasm on the sunny day
in the Gobi Desert.
‘Yes. They are. With the eyes of a tiny little puppy but a pair of black-shaped horns, they are
considered as sheep in Chinese writing, despite their being very like deer.’ Fred explained.
Obviously, the bunch of kids was totally different, filled with enthusiasm, ambitious and
a desire to enjoy the trip. They were eager to ask questions, listen and give replies about the
experience shared by the group. Facing the tough living condition in the desert, they no longer
complained, but took it as a personal challenge, with a desire to conquer this battle.
It was not totally about the stars, or, you may say, but most likely about a discovery. An
inspiration of life, that allowed you to feel the beauty brought by nature, the smell of the
freshness and taste of the air, and witness the magnificent creation of the planet. For one thing,
the group was filled with energy, to finish this exploration across the Gobi Desert!
‘This is the second entry of exploring the Gobi Desert. For this trip, I have witnessed the
growth of a generation of young people, becoming independent and living with soul. According
to the lesson by the greatest teacher in the world, nature…I hope more and more human kind can
learn to appreciate this kind of beauty. The Gobi Desert is a mysterious and inspirational place for
human beings. Explorers left their footprints, one generation with another, it never stops…’
