heard crickets chirping and the leaves rustling. I was resting on my front porch with my golden
retrievers in my new house near the Pearl River. I heard footsteps, lots of them, crunching on the fallen
leaves as the footsteps came closer.
The air grew frosty and damp. I heard commands and squawking of minions. The wind howled. The twigs
cracked, and the sky was turning misty. I heard my heart rattling. I then saw faint shapes in the distance. As
the mist began to clear, I saw short figures with green bony faces, pimples and warts as they came closer and
closer. There was a whole army of goblins storming near my house!
I then saw a slim tall figure with long silky hair. She cackled and barked orders at her goblins. When the
goblins saw her, they immediately fell to their knees and murmured, “Glory to the Highness – our master –
Jiu Wei (The Nine Tailed Fox Demon)”. She flipped her tail and turned into a fox. When she flipped her
tail again, she turned back into a stunningly beautiful young girl.
Jiu Wei then flipped her tail twice and a vermilion bird appeared and stuttered, “My my my master, what do
you wish for?” Jiu Wei boomed, “I wish to make myself beautiful!” “Your wish is my command”,
stammered the vermilion bird. There was then a crackle and the sky turned black. The velvet green grass
turned muddy brown. Flowers that used to sparkle in the sun all wilted. The air smelled like dirty old socks.
The water turned murky grey and was covered with garbage and dead fish. Jiu Wei had sucked out the lives
of everything in the Pearl River Delta!
I looked into outer space, brainstorming. I fished out a packet of chewing gum from my pocket. I then
scampered to my tree house, quickly rummaged the cupboard and found my old catapult. Then I clambered
down the tree house and hid behind a rock. When I finally finished chewing every piece of gum in my
packet and rolling them into tiny bullets, I came out of my hiding spot and yelled, “Wicked demon, come
and fight me!”
“Who dares to call me a wicked demon!” snarled Jiu Wei.
Balancing the extra strong chewed chewing gum on my catapult, I aimed a perfect shot at the demon,
pinning her to the tree.
“Who are you, you pesky little child? What is this disgusting muck on me?” squealed Jiu Wei. I snickered
and showed her the packet of chewing gum.
“Why are you sucking out all the lives here?” I asked. “I want to make myself glamorous and immortal.
You can’t stop me!” Jiu Wei sneered as she turned herself into a fox, swooshed her tail and flicked away the
gum. ”Go, make the people more environmentally considerate. But
you
can’t undo my spell. Not in a
hundred years!” Jiu Wei jeered as she sashayed away.
