Saving Dolphins in the Pearl River Delta
ISF Academy, Huang, Valarie - 8, Fiction: Group 2
t was a chilly night as Sidney strolled through a park in North Point, Breamar Hill. Unexpectedly, he
glimpsed an object in the grass shining beneath the bright moonlight. Hidden in the tall grasses was a
round, metal machine. He quickly hid the machine deeper into the soil and rushed back inside, just in
time for dinner.
The next day, time sped by as Sidney completed homework so that he could visit the machine again.
Just then, Kaitlyn walked past his family’s apartment. Sidney welcomed her and then they skyrocketed
outside to check what kind of machine it was.
Excitedly, the eight-year-olds hauled the heavy machine out of the soil. Kaitlyn’s mouth hung open
in shock as she gazed upon the numerous buttons on the device. “
Why are there so many buttons?
” she
thought. While Kaitlyn was pondering, Sidney daringly decided to push the largest, green button.
BOOM!!!!
Feeling dizzy, they found themselves lying on the ground, looking up at a muddy sky. Instead of fresh
air, the air smelled smoky. Puzzled, they sat up and saw crowds crammed onto the sidewalks, maneuvering
around their bodies. Nobody stopped to offer help, as they were too busy rushing towards enormous
skyscrapers.
Sidney stopped an old lady to ask, “Excuse me, but what year is it? Where are we?”
“2024. Shenzhen…” the woman grumbled in response to the seemingly foolish question.
“WHAT? We’re in the future?! ” Kaitlyn exclaimed.
Nearby, Sidney noticed a map posted on a wall. The map was of the Pearl River Delta, but this
version showed giant, unfamiliar bridges between Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau and Shenzhen-Zhongshan.
Above the map boomed the word MEGACITY in golden lettering.
Next to the map was an advertisement for snorkeling. Sidney asked Kaitlyn, “Wow - want to know
what snorkeling is like in 2024?” Kaitlyn enthusiastically agreed, grabbing his hand and running towards the
beach.
Despite the brown color of the water, the kids plunged into the deep sea, then immediately saw a
pink dolphin swimming towards them. Sidney and Kaitlyn were terrified because they thought the dolphin
was going to attack. Instead, this miserable dolphin approached them and, looking for a friend, cried, “I am
the last remaining pink dolphin!” The two kids felt unhappy, so they rushed back to the time machine,
pressed the green button, and felt dizzy once again.
Zooming back to 2014, Sidney and Kaitlyn spread the sad news of Megacity’s pollution and the last
pink dolphin. Although they put tremendous effort into spreading awareness, people didn’t believe them.
A week later, people of the Pearl River Delta were alarmed to find a pod of pink dolphins laid limp
on the shore beside a pile of rubbish. They started to worry about the possible extinction of the animal, and
began to believe what Sidney and Kaitlyn had warned. They murmured regret to one another about not
believing the kids. So they decided to preserve a peaceful area for the pink dolphins away from the Megacity
that China was dreaming of.
