umbling thunder.
Flashing light.
Peasants everywhere looked up, terrified, to see the world distort as a huge crack split the
ground.
Then the world was still.
Several hundred years later…..
“MOM! I really wanna go to the Pearl River Delta! Why not now? It’s the holidays, we don’t have any
other arrangements and it’d be good to have some experiences! Please?”
Lily sighed as her little sister Rose whined, again, about going on holiday. This time, though, instead of
Paris or America, it was far closer to their home in Beijing.
Instead of simply begging their mother, Lily and Rose’s baby sister Ivy, took a more intellectual approach.
“The autumn is approaching there. The weather is just right, and there’s way less pollution than here. I did
some research and found hundreds of tourist attractions and tours. Besides, it
is
autumn break. They
celebrate the Moon Festival in the same way as us.”
Finally stumped, their mother agreed. Flying to Hong Kong, they’d take a tour around Macau, Shenzhen,
Guangzhou and Kaiping before heading home. “But you have to write in your diaries.” instructed their
mom.
Upon arrival, they toured around parks, malls, pagodas, temples and more, throughout the Pearl River
Delta, staying in various hotels. Finally, they arrived at Kaiping to see the Diaolou, watchtowers built in the
Qing Dynasty. “Can we explore alone?” asked Rose eagerly. “Then we can play games inside!”
Reluctantly, their mother agreed, but said to Lily, “You’re eleven years old. Take care of your sisters.”
They dashed in excitedly. “Witch invasion! Stop them!” Rose squealed.
The sisters dashed up the tower but suddenly stopped short. There was a beautiful, hypnotic whistling sound
coming from faraway. It was emanating from an extremely bright light on the horizon outside the window.
The light and sound completely entranced them, filling their senses until suddenly it was gone.
Ivy blinked. She was lying on the floor, and as she got up she realised that, for the first time in her whole
life, she had absolutely no idea of what was going on. All of her sisters were sitting up, okay. They were still
in the Diaolou, but something about it seemed...different. More alive, somehow. The walls weren’t as
mouldy, and the stone under her feet wasn’t as worn. “Glad to see you're awake.” said a misty voice behind
her.
The girls jumped. “Are you a fairy?” asked a wide-eyed Rose.
