Gobi Desert
Immaculate Heart of Mary College, Teh Yu Hin, Fiction: Group 3
I
t was a cold morning. The gloomy sky had hidden the smiling face of the Sun. Ice covered
the cars on the road, and the weather was prefect for such a sad morning. We were all
blanketed in sadness.
A crowd gathered at the cemetery, waiting for the body to be buried. My friends and I
stood by the side. People were crying for their beloved. My tears ran down my cheek. I could not
hold my tears. The wound on my arm was hurt and bleeding again. My scar, my friend....
Ten years ago, it was around eight o’ clock in the morning, my friends woke me up and told
me about the curse they found in Gobi Desert. They started telling me people were missing in the
desert. We wanted to check it out so we quickly pack our things for the journey. I was excited that
night and couldn’t get a single wink.
The next day, the wind was blowing hard. My friends, Max, Peter, John and I gathered at the
airport. We got on a plane that would take us straight to Mongolia. Then I took a long nap.
Bong! Bong! The plane was landing. I woke up and looked out of the window. At last we
reached Mongolia. After that, we checked in a hotel and got some rest immediately. Then we
rented camels for our trip. The owner of the camels was a man with golden teeth and a bald head.
He told us to be aware of the Gobi Desert. A few days ago a group of travellers went missing. No
one saw them again. I started to worry. Max saw us and patted on my shoulders.
“No worries! Max to the rescue!’ I laughed out and smiled at him.
After a short chat, we set off towards Gobi Desert.
It was really hot walking under the sun. My skin was burning. Our sweat was running over
our body. Our clothes were totally wet. We had to squeeze the water out. I tried looking at the sun
with my bare eyes but it is too bright for my eyes. I yelled ‘Just let me die!’ It was large and dry
at the desert. We started to become thirsty and tired. I sat down on something hard. I looked at it
trying to find out what it was. Yikes! It was the skull of an animal. John took some pictures of it
and then we went to find water.
I began to have illusions of rivers and lake. I tried to drink some water but it was sand. First, I
felt dizzy and then fainted on the sand. When I woke up we were beside a pond. My friends were
happy to see me awake. I asked what I missed. Right before Max could speak Peter answered ‘You
fainted and Max carried you. Then we found this pond. You’ve been out for half a day.’ By that
time, it was already dark so we suggested to rest for the night.
In my dream, I was talking with my mum and dad. My mum suddenly became a monster and
bit my face. It was very painful that I woke up and screamed. I thought the pain was just a part
in the dream. When I touched my face, I felt there was something hanging on. Then I shouted ‘A
scorpion help! Save me!’ My friends woke up immediately. John tried to pull it away roughly but I
stopped him. I told him to stop if he doesn’t want my pretty face being ripped open. Unexpectedly,
the scorpion let go of me and went into a hole next to my hand . I figured out that I was blocking
its way home. John wanted to set the hole on fire but I stopped him just in time. We packed up
and continue our journey.
Days after days, we went on. We came across many things that broadened our horizon to this
world. We came across a sandstorm. The wind was strong. We had to fight our way forward. We
