struggling whether to offer a helping hand or not, Dino had already set off and told me to follow
him. In the time being of rushing towards him, I was a bit embarrassed about what I had done.
As a human being, even though DK was not my friend; he was still a human being. Other words,
we were in the same group. How cold-blooded was I for not even having a feeling to save him.
During the journey to save DK, I was ashamed and I thought Dino also shared the same feeling.
After the strange atmosphere of that journey, we got the place where DK laid down and we
saw DK fainted and a Watson’s water bottle lay near him. It was about one third full of water.
His face was pale white and his lips were turning purple. I had encountered this circumstance
before, maybe he had drunk some toxic water and the only justifiable rationale was it was the
water inside the bottle. I picked it up and glared at the expiry date, which was 29/10/2013, and I
remember clearly that the day when the fire incident happened was 10/4/2012. That meant that
we had arrived in the future at least one year. This matter required no delay; I quickly used the
method that I learned in First Aid lessons to make him vomit all the toxic water out. After a
second, his senses came back and everything has back to normal. He shook my hands and showed
his appreciation for my unselfish action. We agreed to explore this desert together in order to
continue the journey until we could find a way to get back to normal.
Sometime after we became partners, DK and I looked at each other and somehow an
unanticipated enquiry came into our minds at the same time. The question was why the Gobi
Desert looked unusual in terms of size; it seemed that the size was bigger than that what we
had learnt in the geography lesson. We estimated it by the shadow of the sunshine, a technique
invented by an ancient mathematician to measure the height of the pyramids. As Dk was one of
the top five geography students in our form, he could point out the reason behind it promptly. He
said that desertification that getting more and more serious. The land of Mongolia was formerly
covered by plenty of trees, but as China’s need for land was increasing drastically nowadays, they
had to cut down the trees and cause deforestation. The lands originally covered by the trees would
not have enough water and become the relief as desert. This could explain that why the area of
the Gobi Desert’s was growing rapidly.
As DK had drunk some toxic water before, he must have been out of water for a few hours
or even one day. Thus, I invited him to sit on Dino and initiated the way ahead to the Oasis.
Along the way, we saw lots of dead bodies on the ground. They had been crawling to the
Oasis but unfortunately they could not take it physically and died on the way. It was all about
desertification, it made the lands too dry for farming and caused famine to the remote places. It
was miserable the Chinese Government put economic development over the lives of some citizens.
Should we ever sacrifice any human beings to satisfy and fit in the global situation? Does this
show the dark side of the rapid economic development? However it was paramount to develop the
economy; we should care about human beings first. This not only includes the ones we know, but
also the same group that we are in. Even though those victims of the desert were pathetic, we
could do nothing to make them revive. We could only pray for them and reflect what we saw to
the Central Government. We did the best thing in our capability, we entombed them with sand
and prayed for them. After that, we just continued our journey to the Oasis with a sad mood as
nobody was eager to talk.
When we showed up at the Oasis, DK acted like a grave robber who had discovered uncounted
treasures inside. He could not wait even for one more second, and he nimbly ran to the lake and
put his head into the water. He sipped and slurped enough water to even make his belly swell. In
