actions and do not mess with that thing. Shadow out.”
“Roger.”
“Finally, things were over. Sort of successful and seemed too easy huh?” Tandoka chuckled.
“Man, you’ll never wish to see things get tough, or do you?” The captain gave Tandoka a quick
glance with the reply.
“course not, sir.”
“Flashbang!” A distant voice yelled. As soldiers, the camo men understood better than
everyone the next action which needed to be taken once they heard this. They immediately knelt
on the ground back-to-back, while using their forearms to cover their eyes so as to avoid it being
harmed by the ultra-strong light.
“What the freak is going on!” Yelled one of the men.
“Chinese army. Report your ID! Drop your weapons and hands in the air!” The message was
amplified electronically by what appeared to be a loudspeaker.
“Shadow, we are compromised. I repeat, we are compromised,” the captain lowered his voice
and spoke into the mic.
“Trigger the device, Hunter 2-1, shoot at will and from now on the operation is officially
aborted. Shadow out!” The captain understood that there was no way out. He instructed his men
to disarm themselves and act according to what the unseen Chinese troops had ordered.
“Release us, or we would destroy the whole China right now” the captain shouted.
“Give us the device and you shall live,” the loudspeaker replied.
The snipers were in position and smoke was everywhere. It was dawn and everyone could hear
birds chirping.
“Go to hell!” the captain replied in despair. Knowing that he could not survive after all, he
activated the device by rotating the rings on it. There was a silence in the desert. The Chinese
did not shoot and the smoke disappeared. A few seconds later sands were raining from the
sky. The rings on the capsule-like device were still rotating though the captain was no longer
touching them.
“Fire,” demanded the Chinese commander. They were all shots to the head and all the Japanese
fell at once. The Chinese then flushed towards them and retrieved the device.
“Too late, there’s no way back,” said one of the men.
“There’s got the last resort.” The leader of the assault team pulled a key out of his tactical
vest. He inserted it into a hole at the top of the device without a second thought. The rings rotated
slower and slower and finally stopped. The sands stopped raining down eventually. However, it
was no longer the same Gobi.
The geography of the desert had entirely changed after a few minutes of the sand rain. The
troops lost contact with the commander behind the scene. They were stuck. The chaos did not
seem to have a big impact on this prestigious desert. It remains dormant like it has for tens of
thousands of years, with itself situated quietly in the northern part of China.
The news on the conflict between the two nations is still new everyday. But the world will
never know what has happened behind the scenes. No one ever mentioned this, neither the
Japanese side nor the Chinese side.
The ancient device’s location is unknown again. Perhaps in the course of time, it will be
recovered again. However, one thing for sure and undoubtable is that the Gobi will still be
there despite everything. Nothing could change that. Silently, it sits there and waiting the
upcoming challenges.
