Fiction: Group 2
The Pearl River Delta
HKBUAS Primary School, Wong, Yellow - 11, Fiction: Group 2
t was “Project Week” for Hong Kong Primary School. Miss Joyce the teacher of class 3A was standing
there picking out students in one group. She mumbled, “Tim, Jack, Bell in one group, Amanda, Tom
and Sophia in one group, Ella and…” “AW MAN!” three students groaned together behind Miss
Joyce’s back, and they were Amanda, Tom and Sophia. The three of them had disliked each other since
they were toddlers!
“Please Miss Joyce, I don’t like being in a group with them!” Sophia exclaimed as she glared at Amanda
and Tom. “Please, Miss Joyce, I hate them!” agreed Amanda and Tom while pulling the blouse of Miss
Joyce. “I am sorry, but you have to finish the project together”, said Miss Joyce and she walked away as the
school bell rang. “Let’s get this over with, I suppose,” grumbled Amanda “I will prepare the information,
meet me at my home at five!” and she ran to the library.
“So, what are we doing?” asked Tom, playing with the spoon shaped chair at Amanda’s. “I was hoping to
do a report about The Pearl River Delta. Since we learnt about that already, it will make things easier for
us.” “Good. Let’s start!” said Sophia in relief. “Here’s the part I am going to do,” said Amanda as she took
out a small piece of paper filled with the history of The Pearl River Delta. She read it out loud, “Since
economic liberalization was adopted by the Chinese government in the late 1970s, the delta has become one
of the leading economic regions and a major manufacturing center of China and the world. The Chinese
government…”
and so everyone took a turn reading their own parts. “This is good”, suggested Tom
looking at a website about the Pearl River Delta. “What are you talking about? This is better!” cried Sophia,
pointing at another computer link. Before anyone could know it, Sophia was shouting at Tom, and Tom
was screaming, bawling at Sophia. “Stop it guys!” cried Amanda “We can combine all the information,
right?” As Amanda’s hand wiped pass the computer, the trio flashed into the computer, leaving the mess in
reality.
“What did you do?” said Tom in horror. “What did you do?” said Sophia, with an I-truly-doubt-you-
expression. “I am a wizard, so magical things happen when I feel excited or too angry. But no worries, I can
only perform magic with computer screens! No biggie", replied Amanda avoiding to continue to shock her
group mates. “Let’s walk out of here,” suggested Sophia.
“Stop humming, Sophia” snapped Tom when he heard Sophia doing so. You know, Sophia and Tom
started arguing. “Knock it off!” shouted Amanda. As Amanda’s anger got bigger, the trio flashed to the
Exchange Square.
“It’s 2100!
Cool!” muttered Tom, while picking up his glasses. They had gone to the future! But
something was wrong. Everyone screamed, windows were broken and giant octopuses running everywhere,
and flying machines shooting lasers all around. Creatures of the sea came to Hong Kong with the passage
from The Pearl River Delta,
causing chaos. The whole city panicked, and everyone ran for their lives.
Then, Tom took a gander of the room, and he took a glimpse of the glistening computer. Suddenly, red
sparks glowed beside the computer. “It must be magic!” thought Tom. Suddenly, a large octopus climbed
over the glass, and started snatching people into the building. Then the Octopus spotted Amanda's wand,
and it came towards her, planning to eat her and her wand. "Amanda! The computer! Flash us back!" So
Amanda touched the computer, leaving the octopus, swirling around, finding the gang.
“Phew!” said Amanda, wiping the sweat off her face. “That was close.” said Tom, while catching his
breath.
“I am sorry I was rude, I should have listened to your opinions first. If I did not use magic, none of
this would have happened,” said Amanda, apologizing. “It’s fine, I’m sorry too!” said Sophia and Tom.
“Let’s start working.” suggested Sophia. So the three of them went on decorating the poster.
“Go on Amanda,” said Miss Joyce smiling at her group’s work. It was their turn to present. “Well, I
think the plan should stop. It might make the beautiful scenery of the Pearl River Delta even worse, or
disappear!
I can also found some holes in this plan, for example, if you apply water in energy service, the
water will just go on and on, so the light goes on and on! Next, I will pass the time to Sophia,” said
Amanda. It was Project Day for class 3A, everyone was nervous.
At last, the trio won applause, and compliments, and they were the winning group! When the recess
bell rang, Sophia, Amanda and Tom went to the library, “Look!” blurted Sophia when she saw Amanda
holding a floating crystal ball. Sophia and Tom could not resist the glimmering and sparkles of the crystal
