Special Mission
King’s College, Hui Chin Ho, Fiction: Group 3
A
part from the prosperous metropolitan around the globe, there is a deserted territory
with a unique history---the Gobi Desert. It was once a strong and powerful empire but
only sand can survive till now.
I was on my way travelling through the desert with my brothers and mother. Our
sound of footsteps echoed throughout the soundless desert. Nothing but just sand was seen during
our journey. Cactus rarely appeared and that’s actually the only colour in the whole desert. All
of a sudden, I slipped down and slid over the hills of sand. I didn’t know where I was as I was not
familiar with the environment here. I couldn’t see my family after the accident. I got lost!
I was in a total depression and fear. At the same time, I saw a beam of light in front of me. My
curiosity triggered me to find out what it was. I tiptoed and trying to approach that strange light.
My heart was beating faster and faster whenever I got near and near to the light. When I reached
the centre of the light, a mysterious voice started talking. “Little camel, you are the one that was
chosen by the goddess of the Gobi Desert. You will be converted into a human being and require
to solve the major problem of the Gobi Desert---desertification. When you complete this task, you
can make one of your wishes com true.”
After the mysterious voice had finished his conversation, I was changed into a human
instantly without any of my response. It’s too rude! I situated in a laboratory and outside the
window was my home: the Gobi Desert. My identity was a commissioner for preserving the
Gobi Desert. There were blueprints, plans and pictures covered on the table. I got started by
familiarizing the information on the table. I knew about my habitat, and the major problems
that the desert was facing. I worked with my colleague everyday, finding the solutions of
desertification, global warming, overgrazing and so on. I raced against the clock and managed to
facilitate the complicated process of controlling the desertification. I burnt the midnight oil and
tried to shorten the time that was required to finish the project. I extremely missed my family and
wanted to see them at once.
Time flies and all our planning had done and we started to get on with these serious problem.
We fixed the water problems, trying to produce more fertile land in order to prevent the problem
of desertification from becoming more and more serious. We also made constructions to enable
the strategies to operate smoothly. Day by day, we made the Gobi Desert better and better. Trees
surrounded the frontier of the Gobi Desert and obviously prevented the spread of desertification.
Every plant and animal in the Gobi Desert was preserved well and even better than before. I was
absolutely satisfied by this fantastic work.
The magical voice began circling in my mind. It told me that I had accomplished the task
and he would keep his promise. I instantly told him that I wanted to gather with my family.
Blood is thicker than water, my mum should have missed me a lot. Suddenly, some magic glitters
surrounded me and I disappeared with just the smoke left.
I changed back into a camel and finally saw my beloved family. My tears burst out from my
eyes. I growled loudly and emotionally as I finally gathered with my family. When I calmed down,
I realized that we were in the area that I did the protection strategies. All our family members are
safe and sound with a peaceful smile hanging on their face.
