A New Tale of Dr. Sun Yat-sen

Xiang’er, a big fan of books, backed to her old home in Zhong Shan this summer. When her
parents went to visit their friends, she wandered in a market and looked for some old books. It was too hot.
Chilling out in an abandoned temple, hiding in a cozy corner and reading books quietly would definitely be
a fantastic choice for a bookworm. As she was fascinated by the history of the Republican Era, the book she
was reading, was about Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
Maybe the temperature was too high, she thought her head was melting like an ice cream. Faintly,
she felt a puff of smoke got into her eyes. She could not hold her tears. When she wiped the tears, in front
of her was a flourished temple scented with burning incenses. She was still in that temple, but she was not
alone anymore. She was in the middle of an angry crowd, indeed.
“Why do you guys believe in these statues? They are no gods. They cannot offer any help!” A
young man asserted firmly. “ He is a wizard, burn him!” the crowd roared.
“It is so familiar ... oh, I read this in a book. He is … Dr. Sun Yat-sen!” thought Xiang’er. She
knew that would be soon out of control. She needed to rescue him. To distract the crowd, she climbed up a
statue and broke its arm. The people were shocked. Then, she took Dr. Sun with her and sneaked away
from the chaos.
Every pace Xiang’er stepped out was a print of triumph to Sun Yat-sen. He could not stop staring
at her feet. “I didn’t know anyone who has such courage. ” “You mean breaking an arm from a Buddha?”
“No, it is setting free from foot binding. I think that needs lots of courage to fight against the deep rooted
thinking.” “Um … me from my place, there is no more foot binding. I am … from the future.” Although it
was hard to believe, a hero was always open-minded, he trusted in her. To him, the pair of big feet of
Xiang’er was the symbol of freedom and equality, so he called her Xiang’er, the big foot. He knew, together
they fought, they would bring a new era to China.
To inspire Dr. Sun, Xiang’er decided to tell him about “the future”. “In our time, the most
powerful invention is not any weapon, but communication technologies. They include mobile phone and
Internet. They let us connect with a person far away, stay alert on what is happening now in a distant place,
and keep updating news whenever and wherever. It is very helpful in spreading ideas which worth
spreading. It even transforms the way we learn and think”
After her speech, Dr. Sun said exclamatory, “To connect, is a way to save us. As the Chinese are
just like a heap of loose sand, we need to unite them to fight for our modern world! To transform China,
we must arouse their national spirit and transform the mind of individuals,” Dr. Sun fell into a deep thought.
He then wrote Puyi a ten thousand-word letter. However, it seemed none of the words ever existed. To
console Dr. Sun, Xiang’er told him a famous quote of John Lennon, “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m
not the only one.”
The Qing Government was far too stubborn. They decided to take a more progressive action - an
uprising. To gain support and money to bring forth such a revolution, Dr. Sun went overseas to raise funds
and find support for his idea. He had many hardships, many uprisings failed. Once he felt defeated, he
recalled the words of John Lennon.
