eorge was bored. He had been wandering around the house for hours. He felt as though he should
be helping in the war, and what had happened to Daddy in the war?
No, Daddy couldn’t possibly be dead… George pushed the image out of his mind.
Mummy was really sick; they did not need any more worries. They had to bring him home.
“ Fred, get up! It’s already dawn! And Violet, please don’t stay there for another century like you
did before!’’ taunted George. Violet sat up and angrily stared at George
“Do you have any news about Daddy?” asked George, just to change the subject.
“Well, I suppose I know a thing or two about his whereabouts. Mummy said Daddy is at the third
longest river, and something about… about soil and dirt and too much…’’ Violet paused, sounding
extremely worried.
“Too much what? Too much
sand
?” George asked sarcastically.
“For Pete’s sake, stop it!’’ Violet looked at the clock. “My word, it’s already ten; that boy really can
sleep!”
Fred woke up with yawns and stretches, before going to the bathroom to change. “Good morning
both of you. How’s dad?”
It was such an abrupt question that the children nearly jumped. “We have absolutely no idea what
is going on with the war,’’ Violet concluded.
“Maybe we could go to the battlefield and try to get daddy back so that he can help Mummy
recover quicker,” Fred suggested.
“We need someone to take care of Mummy whilst we are gone.” The children finally decided
amongst themselves that Violet should stay home since she was a girl.
According to Mummy, the river was called the Pearl River Delta. And what was more, she agreed
that the boys could try to bring Daddy back.
They clambered onto the bus to the River, after lots of sobs and kisses. The boys looked at their
cottage for the last time, before heading into the unknown.
Riding on a bus to a war made the two children quite uneasy. They tried to feel more
adventurous.
Finally, the bus stopped. They had arrived at The Police Department. They then walked a few
miles and caught a taxi. The taxi seat was lumpy and cracked. As the boys looked at it, they imagined how
scary it would be in the war if the ground cracked in the same way. They would surely not have liked it if
the ground welcomed them into the spooky underworld.
Eventually, they stepped out of the taxi; they observed the surroundings. It seemed all quiet. Too
quiet in fact. The boys could feel tension all around, as though the end had come.
After walking a long distance, they heard a battle cry so horrendous that Fred felt like going back
home. Suddenly, they were engulfed in the middle of the war…
Fighting was not Fred’s idea of fun, but he knew that no matter how tough it would be, he had to
find Daddy. Then the boys saw that the Chinese soldiers there were all in full combat mode.
“You are going to die General Chen,” A Japanese soldier roared. There stood Daddy, holding a
sword in his hand. The children looked at him in astonishment.
Daddy, the head of the Chinese army? Now it would be so much harder to bring him home given
his important position.
Very quickly, the whole place was full of soldiers fighting from both countries.
As the battle raged on, Fred saw that other Japanese soldiers were filling the once peaceful river
with what looked like dirt.
“Where are you going?” asked George.
“To the river,” were Fred’s only words as he rushed to save the Pearl River Delta.
The Japanese were filling China’s beloved river with dirt to create a path for all of them to cross.
Daddy’s army fought back valiantly to hold back the enemy. More and more soldiers swam across
the river; there was no chance for China.
