New Tales of the Pearl River Delta

n the year 2076, there were no more people on land. The land was quiet and silent. But underwater,
there was a lot going on.
In the deepest part of the big blue sea was an underwater world. There were all kinds of new sea
creatures, like mermaids and mermen. Ruling over them was a merciless king named Miraz. He forced the
merpeople to build him palaces and do things they didn’t like to do.The merpeople had to obey because if
they didn’t, they would be sent to jail and be tortured.They only had a few hours of the whole day to relax
and play! The favourite way of resting for the children was to ride around on their seahorses and playing
hide-and-seek. For grown-ups, they liked to sit around and eat their favourite sweet-salted caramel!
One sunny day in October, Miraz announced that they were going to have to migrate on land because the
water would freeze. So, they all packed up and got ready to go on land.
They first went to the warmest and nearest place they could think of – Hong Kong. After great
difficulty, they finally arrived at their destination. They marveled at the view and explored everywhere.
Suddenly they saw a critter that was stuck in a hole. Susan went over and pulled it out of the hole. All of a
sudden, the critter turned into a fairy. Lucy stammered. “Who are you?” “I amViolet, the fairy of kindness.
When I see someone do something kind, I will appear and give them a ruby. As there has nobody around for
the past 5 years, I still have the ruby. Now I will pass it to you.”The fairy replied. Edmund asked.“What will
we do with the ruby?” ”I have 4 other sisters. 3 of them have the emerald, sapphire and jade respectively.
They will appear when you do good deeds or think good thoughts. The fourth will appear when you have
all of the jewels. You have to get the places in the Pearl River Delta to find the remaining jewels. Good
luck!”And before they could say anything else, she vanished into thin air. So, they set off to find the jewels.
First, they went to Macau.They searched and searched for a good deed to do but they just couldn’t
find one.They were about to leave Macau when they saw a gold coin lying on the ground. Knowing that the
coin was not rightfully theirs, they walked past the coin, the gold coin dramatically turned into a fairy in
front of them.“Hi, I am Pamela, the fairy of honesty.Violet informed me that you would be coming. Here is
the emerald.”Without another word, Pamela vanished into thin air, just her sister,Violet had done.
Then, they went to a place called Shenzhen.“I wonder what’s next?” Lucy said. She was so excited
that she jumped up and down carelessly and landed on Edmund’s tail. “Ouch! Lucy, be more careful next
time. I’ll forgive you – “But before he could finish his sentence, a fairy appeared out of nowhere. “Hello,
I’m Nicky, the fairy of forgiveness. I had the sense that you would be coming. Here is the jade.”
All of a sudden, there heard trumpets in the distance. Nicky turned pale.” Quick! Miraz is coming!
Run or hide!” “But we can’t run fast with these tails and there’s not a hiding place for miles around!” “I’m
going to turn you into fairies for now so you can go faster. When you want to turn back into merpeople,
just say the word “Change!” Now go go ! Nicky said.
They moved on until they spotted Guangzhou. Then they flew down and said the word “Change!”
together.“I wonder what fairy we’re going to meet next? “ “I don’t know, maybe the fairy of ……”“Stop! ”
Edmund cried. The girls were so absorbed in discussing that they didn’t know that they had come to a
bridge. They were almost about to fall over the edge when Edmund stopped them. All of a sudden, a troll
climbed up the sides of the bridge, facing them.“I am going to ask you a riddle. If you can’t answer it in 10
seconds you will be frozen! Here is the riddle: I work all day, dark or light.You use me all day long, whether
day or night. I walk on two legs or sometimes three! It is an electrical appliance.You have three chances. Can
you guess what it is? “A TV!”“No!”“A…”“5…4…3…”The troll counted down.“I’ve got it! It is a clock!”
Peter cried out. “Correct!”Then, to their astonishment, the troll changed into a fairy right in front of their
own eyes! “Hello, I am Paulina, the fairy of wisdom. Here is the last jewel that you need to find: the sapphire.
Now everybody, I will take you to the centre of the Pearl river delta where you can make the jewels that you
