New Tales of the Pearl River Delta

n the year 2031, life had changed a lot in the Pearl River Delta. People didn’t think about nature, not
even a speck of it. The worst perpetrator was, a Chinese man called Jun-man. He invented a power
plant called the Absolute-gen. It generated power by pouring used-up chemicals onto waste (e.g.
trash, dead animals). The heat generated by the chemical is converted into electricity. After generating the
electricity, the used-up waste is dumped out to sea. Poison and stench flooded the entire Pearl River. The
sea became putrid, no one went near it.
However, fresh drinking water in Hong Kong was transported from Dong Jiang. So, a lot of people that
lived in cities around the Pearl River migrated to Hong Kong for clean water. This large-scale migration
made the citizens of Hong Kong forlorn.
Meanwhile, Terry had another problem. He played on his computer each day but today things went
differently. A display appeared on his screen “You have been banned. Signal from host 90210”.
Terry was surprised. “What? I have antivirus!”
People started calling him, “What are you doing? You hacked as again!”
“We are banned because of YOU!”
“Port 90210. It’s YOU!”
Terry was upset. “It isn’t me.” A while later, he heard a loud BOOM! One of the sea power-lines had
collapsed and exploded, Terry was confused.
At the HKSF(HK Science Factory), a bunch of scientists were figuring out why the power line had
collapsed. They tested the seawater by putting a piece of steel in the water. The steel fizzed and vaporized
into thin air. The scientists were shocked and quickly threw the seawater away.
Terry realized that his computer had gone crazy because the power line had broken. He hacked into the
HKMC(HK Mission Control). He searched the secret files and found the “steel-fizzing” file. It stated,
“HKMC secret files: 17

July 2031, HKSF Agency. The water contains acidic toxins that melt certain
materials. It is generated by a factory that produces chemicals. We are developing a suit that protects people
from the seawater…”
The next day, Terry went to find his clever pal Selina. Terry told her the situation and asked her “ How
can we save the population from the acidic seawater? The bridge out there is going to collapse and millions
of people will die.”
Selina’s eyes grew wide as she replied, “I don’t know…”
Terry glared at the TV. “$1000 for one suit!” Resistant to the acidic seawater! You can go swimming
now. Available now from the Hong Kong Science Museum!”
The next day, a poem was in Terry’s mailbox:
To find the Pearl of Delta
Hidden in a mysterious shelter
Swim up to the point of the Pearl River Delta.
There you will find the Zhuhai Cave,
In the cave lies a precious pearl.
In order to complete your mission for millions to save,
Remove it carefully or future will make swirls and twirls.
A light bulb appeared above Terry’s head. He shouted, “Let’s go to the Science Museum!”
At the museum store, the manager yelled,” Two suits left!” Terry raced into the store and slammed a 1000-
dollar bill on the counter.
The suits were white in colour with a retro hazmat helmet and yellow gauntlets and boots. On its back
there was an oxygen tank. Terry could not believe his eyes. Two brand new suits were in front of him.
Their “ Save-the-river mission” was about to start! “Wait-----“ Terry paused. “I don’t have a boat!”
He raced back home and was shocked. Their other friend James had just bought a giant 3D printer and
some carbon fiber filament. “Sorry Terry, I need to borrow your computer and I am going to print a boat
now—“ Terry: “Did you just said “Boat?” James knew what he meant and leant the boat to Terry.
Terry and Selina wore the suits and jumped into the sea along with the boat. They additionally asked James
to print two oars to steer the boat. They came across plastic bags, bottles, broken umbrellas. At last, they
