New Tales of the Pearl River Delta

nce upon a time, there was a very big family in China. The family members lived in nine
different cities of China, namely Guang Zhou, Shen Zhen, Zhu Hai, Fo Shan, Dong Guan,
Zhong Shan, Hui Zhou, Kong Mun and Zhao Qing.
All of them hoped to visit one another so they wanted to build a road among the nine cities. Every
day and night, they worked very hard. They took a lot of rocks and threw them into the ocean. However,
all the rocks were sank to the bottom of the ocean. The family members were very sad and cried and cried.
They said, ‘How can we do, my God? Can you help us? We need to build the road because we want to
meet one another.’
Thetis, the Goddess of Ocean, saw them crying. She felt very sad too. She asked Pele, the Goddess
of Hawaii Volcano, for help. However, the Goddess of Hawaii Volcano did not want to help her. She said,
‘If you can pass my three tests, then I will help you.’ Thetis said, ‘Ok!’
Pele said, ‘The first test is to find some colourful pearls and make a necklace for me.’ Then Thetis
called all the ocean animals to help her to find the colourful pearls. The crabs found red and orange pearls.
The fish found yellow and green pearls. The seahorses, lobsters and prawns found cyan, blue and purple
pearls.
While Pele looked at the colourful pearl necklace happily, she said, ‘The second test is I will give you
some strings, you need to make a beautiful handbag for me.’ However, Thetis’ weakness was arts so she did
not know how to do. Suddenly, some octopus came and said, ‘Dear Thetis, we can help you.’ Then they
quickly made a very beautiful handbag for Pele. Pele liked this handbag very much so she said, ‘You can pass
the second test.’ All the ocean animals cried, ‘Hurray!’
Pele thought and thought, she said, ‘The last test is to make the biggest bubble of the world which can
help me to fly.’ All of them had no idea of what to do. Then turtles had an idea, ‘We can ask whales to
help us because they can blow a very big bubble.’ At last, the bubble was so big that Pele could fly with
Thetis and the ocean animals together.
Pele said, ‘Congratulations, you have passed all the tests and I will help you now.’ Pele went to the
volcanoes around the world and took many volcanic rocks, then she threw all of them into the ocean. At
that moment, Thetis cut the ocean into two pieces. A year later, they finished building the roads of the nine
cities. Finally, the big family members can visit one another. Everyone felt very happy, including the
Goddesses of Ocean and Hawaii Volcano.
Then all of the family members thought that all the roads looked like a triangle so they called this
place the Pearl River Delta. The story was passed along forever.
