Story of the Pearl River Delta

he Pearl River Delta, the Golden Delta of Guangzhou, is an amazing river delicately weaving
through Macau, gracefully twisting and turning within Shenzhen, and vividly drifting in and
out of Guangzhou
.”
That’s me. I am the Pearl River Delta. I am the fascinating river described, that was “adopted” in
the late 1970, by the Chinese government.
When I was a young river, a free and solitary soul, the fish and dolphins never had to worry about
extinction. These days, pollution’s impact is affecting us strongly.
Air pollution is especially a nuisance. Heavy smog is choking me and everyone, humans and
animals around me. 13 provinces in China have been affected in 2013. One of the main ones was Beijing.
Stop this, humans, or you might also be exterminating your own.
Humans have dumped toxic waste in me, dirtying my waters, and killing off the creatures that call
me home. One species, the Hong Kong pink dolphin, the Chinese White Dolphin, or the
Sousa Chinensis
,
is, unfortunately, inching closer to extinction faster than any of the other animals here.
My story today is about these desperate dolphins. Please, humans, please help save these spectacular
animals.
Squeaky was a young and energetic dolphin, the exact opposite of her twin sister, Glitch. Glitch
was a straight A
+
dolphin, while Squeaky was a texting master.
Squeaky’s name was based on her personality, as all dolphin names go. Whenever you needed
someone to chitter to, you can always come to Squeaky.
Her sister, however, was the silent type. She didn’t talk to anyone, unless she was shooting up her
fin to answer a question. Glitch was named Glitch because of that habit of hers. Whenever an adult asked
her a question, her hand rocketed up so fast, it looks like it glitches right up.
Squeaky admired her sister, since she usually had an average of D
+
grades and only got her ‘+’
because the teachers all liked her. Her true score would actually be a G, which doesn’t exist, but it is the
only score worse than an F.
She’s the kind of dolphin who can’t sit still. That wasn’t exactly her problem. She was born with
ADHD, which is super rare for dolphins. The bad thing is, she is always texting herself to find something for
her busy hands to do.
All her teachers in every grade tried to teach her to stop, but her hands would still fly across the
screen of her iPhone 6. By the way, dolphins use Aqua, not Apple.
But one unfortunate day, Squeaky lost her phone. She searched everywhere. When she got home,
she was so nervous she kept on talking.
“Glitch, can you believe I lost my iPhone 6? Remember mom said that if I don’t lose it for a
month, she’ll get me an iPhone 6 Plus? But I lost it within 19 days! I can’t believe that-”
“It’s not 19 days yet. It was 18 days, 22 hours, 45 minutes, and 9.3847 seconds exact.”
“How did you know?”
“We’re twins, remember? I was born first, on January 18, 2012, at 9: 42 and 16 seconds in the
morning, and then you were born 4.83 seconds later.”
“How do you know all this stuff?”
“I counted.”
“The second you were born?”
“Actually, the-”
“I’ve heard enough! Let’s talk about my phone.”
“Well, humans in the US lost $3 billion worth of mobile phones last year.”
“Yeah, who cares? I think I’m going to talk to the police about this crook.”
“You don’t know anyone stole it.”
“I don’t care. Someone might have.”
Glitch rolled her eyes at her sister, who was murmuring something about stalkers. Then, a rare
moment occurred. Squeaky was right, and there was a stalker, stalking her right that moment.
“T
