Fiction: Group 2
“No, we are Australian and speak English, and we tell you to NOT throw the rubbish
in the river!”
The girl’s eyes welled up with tears and started to sob…”Me…no…under…English” The girls were
surprised, then turned their book and said “wo men bu zhi dao jong wen, wo men ke yi jiao ni yin wen.”
The little girl was startled but said, “Ni hao, wo jiao Xiaomei.” Soon, Xiaomei could speak English fluently.
“So the Pearl River Delta is polluted?” Xiaomei asked. “Yes, and we want to save it.” said the girls. “But
how?” said Allison.
“We can make signs to tell the people! My papa is a builder, he has everything we need!” said Xiaomei.
“Yeah! Let’s go! Delta buddies, go!” Screamed the girls and marched off to find
Xiaomei’s father.
When they came back, they did not even stop to get water. They instantly painted, carved, straightened,
measured and hammered.
BONK! “Ouch!” Cried Teresa, and laughed with the girls. Soon they finished and nailed the sign to the
ground in front of the Pearl River.
“Now, I think they will recycle!” said Allison.
“Um…what is recycling?” said Xiaomei.
The girls were so surprised and looked at each other. “Recycling is when you save things for using again!”
said Stephanie. “Oh! I do that at home.” said Xiaomei. “Others can recycle too! We just need to teach
them.”
A few days later, they found the result was not as good as expected. “Oh no! Now what do we ought to
do?” “Perhaps we can give a speech to convince the people!” So they planned and made announcements to
the people about the speech day. Also the girls learnt Chinese quickly with Xiaomei.
It was the day of the speech. To the girls’ surprise, thousands of people had gathered to watch. They were
all here to watch a four-little-girls-presentation. “Ni hao, ni hao!” started the girls over the people’s
applause. The speech went well with no mistakes, their speech about how important the Pearl River Delta is
to the people and about how important cleanliness of the water is to the health of the people, touched the
audiences. The applause was even bigger. Lots of the audience promised to keep the river clean and signed
the commitment sheets that the girls made.
“Yeah, we did it!” And they all hugged each other and laughed.
Soon, it was time to go home. The three held back their tears while saying goodbye to Xiaomei. Before
they stepped into the portal, they grabbed Hoppy, Harry and Princess. Xiaomei said, “Wait!” And she
handed 3 pretty stones out to the girls.
“The most graceful, beautiful stones from the Pearl River Delta, it’s a souvenir foreach of you.”
They were so grateful and hugged Xiaomei again. As they said “thank you”, they disappeared back into the
Queensland world.
