The New Tales of Gobi Desert

I
t was a freezing and humid day in this stunningly beautiful forest named ‘Gobi’. The forest
was definitely a masterpiece, made by the hands of all Greek Gods. The whole forest covers
up to the area of two times bigger than Europe, consisting of more than a million trees of
different species.
Zeus and some other Gods were having a party in the forest. Wine, fruits and chocolates are
scattered all around a wooden rectangular table, inlayed with rubies and sapphires and diamonds.
‘It’s not fun sitting here and eating fruits only, grandpa,’ said Zeus’ grandson, Ajax. ‘Let’s play
hide-and-seek!’
Certainly, Zeus did not like the idea. However, as he wanted to stop his grandson, he already
flew away, asking for other Gods to play with him. Playing hide-and-seek seemed a very good
idea to the young, since all of them thought having this sort of ‘regular parties’ between their
‘adults’ could not be more boring. In a blink of an eye, someone was already screaming, ‘Ready!
I’m coming in 10, 9, 8...’
‘How can this forest be this large! It’s like a maze!’ thought Ajax. ‘I surely have an advantage
as I am the person to hide.’ At the same moment, he felt someone patting his back. As he turned
his head, he was tackled to the ground from mid air. ‘Got you!’ said the same voice of the boy who
was just counting. ‘You are the only one I can catch,’ chuckles the boy, ‘and you should be the one
catching us now.’
Ajax was mad and ashamed. At the beginning of the second round, he yelled furiously, ‘You’d
better find yourself a better spot to hide! I’m going to find all of you, even if I have to tear the
whole forest apart! 10, 9, 8...’
As he counted down to eight, he opened his eyes and tried to cheat. Nobody, however, could
be seen. ‘What? Well, anyway, time’s up!’ he opened his eyes and shouted. He flew up and hovered
over the whole forest but he could not notice a single target. ‘Where is everybody?’ he roared, ‘I
do not have much patience!’
As stated in the rules, if Ajax could not find any of them in ten minutes, he would lose. Time
was winding down, but he still could not spot anybody. ‘I cannot lose! I would be teased about
this!’ Then an idea struck his head. He went back to his grandpa and snatched his lightning bolt.
Before any Gods could realise what happened, all trees in the forest were struck down and burnt.
‘Here I come, losers!’ Ajax whistled and he could then clearly target everyone.
‘Do you know how hard it was to build the Gobi forest? It...it is now the “Gobi Desert”!’ Zeus
shouted as if fire was coming out of his mouth. Of course, Ajax was heavily punished when they
got back home. At the meantime, Gobi Desert was made.
