i, Cho Lam! Morning!”
“Hey, how are you, Cho Lam?”
“You look great today, Cho Lam!”
I swaggered past them without lowering my head. They were temporary actors only. At least, I was a
stuntman. Today, I would even act as Jack Jack Chan’s, the famous movie star, stuntman. They didn’t
deserve to be greeted, especially by the most famous stuntman in Shenzhen, Hung Cho Lam.
My mind had been teemed with many “Whys”. Why didn’t I look like Jack Jack Chan? Why was my
surname “Hung” instead of “Wong”? Why was I not Wong Cho Lam? Being a famous comic actor in
Hong Kong had been my dream.
“Cho Lam, stop dreaming! It’s your turn!” the director snapped. “You’re going to switch your role with Tai
Man today. I think he is more suitable to tackle the job.”
“Pardon, Mr Director? It is written that I am going to act as Jack Jack Chan’s stuntman. Is there anything
wrong?” I was astounded. Steam was billowing out of my nose.
The director closed his eyes and my heart sank. I understood it was no use arguing. Did I accept this
meekly?
“Hi, Cho Lam! You look pale. Anything wrong?” asked Tai Man.
I snorted and did not give him a glance. I thought he was sneering at me. I was supposed to be engaged in a
fighting shot and then jumped down from the third floor. Now, I could only fight while Tai Man took the
role to jump. Tai Man went to the props box and handled me a rod. I didn’t take it but stormed angrily to
get one on my own.
“New Tales of the Pearl River Delta. Take 1. Action!”
Tai Man and I had been partners and competitors for many years. We had taken part in fighting scenes many
times before. However, this was the most vigorous and intense one. I wished to fight my superior stuntman
role back! I gritted my teeth and hit him with my rod viciously. He used his rod skilfully to stop my rod.
My blood was boiling like lava. I leapt forward, grabbing him by the shoulders and punched him on his arm.
He dropped his rod and was unable to fight back.
“Cut!” shouted the director. “Wonderful! Good job, Cho Lam! I might have made a mistake. You’re to
take the jumping action in the next shot.” The director patted me on my shoulders. “But no need to hit so
atrociously next time.” Turning to Tai Man, the director asked, “Are you okay?”
“Suuuu…..sure!” murmured Tai Man in acute pain, looking poor and helpless.
I felt a bit regretted for what I had done. However, as I recalled the scent of my blood, how the hot agony
felt like and how he tore me apart, I walked past Tai Man without saying sorry.
Now, my position to act as Jack Jack Chan’s stuntman was solidified. Nobody could grab this away from me
anymore. I had to look forward. In the next shot, the story continued with a man from Hong Kong
working in a factory in Shenzhen. He had been missing his wife and children in Hong Kong and so he kept
their photos in his wallet daily. Once, he lost his wallet and suspected it was stolen by his teammate. He said
he was willing to let him keep the money provided that his teammate returned him with his family photos.
