New Tales of the Pearl River Delta

t was a dark and stormy night.
David lay by the icy window, watched the trees tossing in the lashing of the wind. Behind the
skyscrapers on the sides of the Pearl River, clouds started gathering tardily across the sky. Cracks of light
ripped the sky off, causing black, wraith-like shadows raced across by. But it seemed they carried on with
the sightseeing.
The ship shook.
Wrapped in his thick black coat, David shook.
The ship came to a stop by the Canton Tower.
He was delighted to visit his birthplace-the Pearl River Delta. He had been immigrated to London
for a long time ago.
But things weren’t doing good.
It shook again.
Seconds later, the ship started to tilt. At first it was only minor. The ruthless wind began slashing
harder. Then everything sloped to the right. It sank.
David slammed into the cold, dark river. It was nothing like the Pearl River. It was frosty and dead.
However, David struggled in order to survive. He saw light on the surface and swam to a small boat. No
matter where the boat was going, he climbed in and survived.
The boat was going to Hong Kong.
It was where the tale started- the beautiful city of the Pearl River Delta, Guangzhou.
The tale must be going onwards.
Finally, the boat sailed into Hong Kong’s territory. The boat made a gentle clashing sound with the
bumpers of a small, standard pier. At long last he was lucky (but not very because of the shipwreck. I mean,
accident) enough to continue with his journey.
After getting off the boat, he went wandering around the city with no destination until he saw a
magnificent architecture.
It was the famous clock tower of Tsim Sha Tsui. At first he looked out of the sea.
“Wow! What did I see?” exclaimed David. He saw the astonishing, beautiful scene of the Victoria
Harbour. “How can I believe that?” he said again full with expression. It was the total opposite in the old
days. There were high and straight skyscrapers with big ships sailing on the flashing silver sea. Enormous
numbers of people walking hurriedly across the streets.
Then he turned back to the tower. The entire tower was just like a stick, pointing all up to the blue
sky.
The tower seemed to be very familiar in his mind. But he just couldn’t remember when he came here
before.
His face remained looking at the sky. He then felt everything changed- people, buildings,
technologies… The most he felt was the atmosphere. It was quite difficult to describe-the city was
prosperous. People were all walking on the streets; roads were filled up with cars.
Well, it’s enough for this, he was a little bored.
He marched down the street; he felt hungry. He had only 100 dollars with himself. His backpack all
sank into the deep Pearl River. But, he decided to eat in a restaurant at last. He couldn’t hold the hunger
much longer.
After a
great
meal for him, he went to loaf about the city again.
David wanted to go back home. But he didn’t have enough money to buy a ticket back to London.
He passed a big and grand mall. And he saw a large poster written with huge red words: “COME TO
THE MACAU FAMOUS CASINO, EXTEND YOUR FORTUNE!!!”
Suddenly, David’s mind struggled, “Oh, dear. Should I take a high risk of ruin? I wanted to go back to
London! But what if I lost all the money? What if I don't have enough money to take the ship? What if…
Oh, stop it. This was my only chance of going back home! I had no way to choose.”
After a short journey, David arrived Macau. He quickly searched for the direction of the Venetian
Macau-the biggest casino over the world.
He kept repeating himself to cheer up and to be brave.
