am Brian. I live with my family in the Pacific Ocean. We are the strongest school of whales nearby.
Being the youngest member in the family, I win the caring and love of all others. But, I don’t like it!
I always long for freedom and challenge. Since I heard from my friend Pluto the shark about the beauty of
the Pearl River Delta, I couldn’t stop dreaming to pay a visit there. One day morning, when everybody
was busy hunting their breakfast, I started my journey.
It took me two weeks to swim all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the South China Sea. I went
continuously up to the north and when the water became less salty, I knew it was Pearl River already! You
couldn’t imagine the magic when the sea water and the river water mixed! The colours, the taste, the
movement of water, et. Touched my feeling. I had never seen such beauty and was shocked by the power
of the nature!
Being a whale of more than four meters, I needed plenty of food. I tried the fish from the Pearl River.
Although they were smaller and thinner, their tastes were really fantastic. I had kept some for my family. I
believed they would probably love the tastes!
Soon, I met Rose, a pink and vivid dolphin. She told me that her family was nearby and she was willing to
be my tourist guide.
I learnt from Rose that the main areas surrounding the Pearl River Delta were Guangdong, Hong Kong and
Macau. Major cities included Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Huizhou, Dongguan, etc. We could even go east to as far
as the Fujian province. Guangdong province was China’s main manufacturing centre. Hong Kong was a
major international economic and financial centre. In Macau, the gambling business was highly developed.
There was around 60 million population around the Pearl River Delta.
Rose said she liked Hong Kong the most. I saw tall buildings, fast, big and beautiful ships, busy and
interesting people on shore. They pointed at Rose and me with curiosity and took photos of us. Indeed, I
was a bit nervous when the cameras were pointing at me! We struggled through the Victoria Harbour and
went upward to the north for Guangdong.
Suddenly, I found some plastic bags floating on the sea. Then, there came also cans, bottles, decay woods,
newspapers, etc. I couldn’t imagine why human beings would allow such pollution in the sea! Gradually, I
even found dead pigs, smelly fish and dirty oil rushing from the north. I was so scared and seam as fast as
possible towards the south.
Rose looked at me helplessly and we both knew that our journey wouldn’t continue. Rose told me that
that was the cost of development and modernisation. And, her family had to suffer but had no say! I was so
lost and thought it was time to go home.
I waved goodbye to Rose and went my way straight back to the Pacific Ocean with full of sorrow. I told
myself I must not return to the Pearl River Delta until such time that pollution was gone!
