The Great Dolphin Escape

he seabed shook furiously in the sea close to Zhuhai of the Pearl River Delta. Waves grew bigger
and stronger. Marine animals swam lightning-fast towards the beach. And all these things could
only possibly add up to...a tsunami.
Or that's what Pinky the dolphin thought. Tsunamis never happened in the Pearl River Delta.
But Pinky was so terrified that she could only keep screaming, "Tsunami!" She swam in circles, diving in
and out of the water, panicking instead of escaping.
And at one stage, when the poor little dolphin had finally known that swimming in circles
wouldn't help, and when she was smart enough to know that she would have been drowned by the time she
had finished panicking, the shaking still continued, and she was sure that there was something wrong. Pinky
rushed off to tell the leader of the school of dolphins.
Pinky, tired and nervous, told the leader about the incident, panting louder than an elephant
bellowing. Well, she wasn't exactly the sporty type. The old leader nodded his head slowly and flapped his
fins, trying to think of a solution. His rough, pink skin turned blue. He looked at the anxious dolphin in
front of him. Tears were in his big eyes. He too was worried. "There is no solution. We...only have hope
of escaping this thing, whatever it is." Then a high-pitched scream underwater followed.

"This is an emergency meeting," the leader announced. A few sniggers were heard. "Oh, one of
those again? Like...the ones which actually are mistakes?" A dolphin said sarcastically, a hint of annoyance
and scornfulness on his face. "Oh, great."
"Shut up, Delvin. This is a real one. My spies report that there is a construction of a new bridge
in the sea of the Pearl River Delta, and the seabed will keep shaking, annoying us. Furthermore, and more
importantly, there is an oil leak." Dolphins gasped. Their solemn faces were filled with disgust and anxiety.
Pinky was even more troubled. "How are we going to get out of here?" she thought.
"Now, I have a plan. So, we will first try to swim around the construction site, then go deep
underwater to get away from the oil. We will swim close to the city and find another place to live. Is that
understood?"
"And, Delvin," the leader added mockingly, "I'm sure that you would love to lead the group, won't
you?" Then he muttered, "Don't dolphins have manners anymore?"

So then they set off, fast as they could, into the deep blue sea. The murky sea was filled with trash
and was impossibly hard to swim in. The water was dirty and covered in black oil. It looked like
something in a black hole. But it was enough to choke the dolphins. "Urgh!" Pinky threw up in the sea.
And...you wouldn't want to know what dolphin vomit looked like. There was also some smog due to the
pollution of the industry factories in Guangzhou. Anyway, the school of dolphins 'raced' through the water,
swimming swiftly, occasionally jumping out of the waves. The scene was magnificent. One would stare
with awe at the sight.
But as they got closer to the city, where there was no disturbance from the construction site,
Delvin, leader of the dolphins, choked. He gagged and coughed and spluttered, tears coursing down his
face. "Smog!" He squeaked. "Retreat, army!"
