um, can you tell us the story one more time about your village?” asked Hermione at
night, even she and her baby sister had heard the story a million times. Mum said, “When
I was a little girl, the Pearl River Delta was like a paradise. Wild flowers and trees grew
everywhere. Itwasa wonderful place to live. It was the prettiest place on earth.” The girls drifted off to sleep,
their dreams filled with visions of paradise.
Years later, Hermione and Ginny, who longed to go to the Pearl River Delta, grew into teenagers
and had the great opportunity to visit there on their own. When Ginny and Hermionearrived there, they
were quite disappointed and shocked as the environment there was entirely polluted. It was totally different
from the scene their mother had described to them. They could hardly see anything in the brown smog.
They saw sewage pouring into the water. Even worse, some dead fish and lots of litter were floating on the
dirty black water.
Outside a nearby factory, Ginny and Hermione also saw a few people trying to convince the
factory workers not to pollute the environment so much. When Ginny and Hermione saw that the people
were from Greenpeace, they were happy, as those people may help save the environment. They both knew
that the Pearl River Delta is the place where Chinese white dolphins inhabit. And that’s one of the reasons
that the environment there shouldn’t be polluted. Hermione and Ginny suddenly saw the boss of the factory
and so they ran in front of him immediately. They told him that they shouldn’t pollute the environment
anymore. The environment doesn’t only belong to him, it belongs to everyone, including the 42 million
citizens living there. The boss of the factory was in a huge shock. He told Ginny and Hermione that they
had already tried to plant trees in some other places in the Pearl River Delta. However, it only helped a little
and the air quality was only a little bit better.
Hermione and Ginnyknew that the longer they stayed near the factories, the more polluted
environment they might see. They wanted tosee something prosperous there. Through the media, they
knew that some builders were building a bridge called the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. When they
arrived there and saw the builders, they at once saw a bridge. Even though it was unfinished, it was still
extremely enormous. They used their phones to search for the purpose of the bridge. And so they knew that
the bridge is for connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau, so that people can go to other places more
easily.
Ginny and Hermione arrived at the Pearl River Delta at noon and they spent their whole
afternoon walking. Then it was time for their supper. To ensure that they wouldn’t eat any poisonous
vegetables, they ate food imported from other countries. They were both quite unsatisfied as they did not
have the chance to eat the local food in the Pearl River Delta. So they had their dinner once more in a
Cantonese restaurant. It wasn’t bad.
After looking at an unfinished but still enormous bridge and tasting some Cantonese food, Ginny and
Hermione discovered that except for the pollution, almost everything was pretty good. So they went to the
factory area and tried to convince the boss of the factory not to destroy the environment again. However,
the boss wasn’t there at that moment. Their only way to communicate with the boss was to write a letter to
him. They wrote about the problems and the solutions and the reasons. They sincerely hoped that they
could see a much better Pearl River Delta with a cleaner environment during their next visit to the Pearl
River Delta.
After Hermione and Ginny posted their letter, they returned to the hotel. They were quite happy
about what they did, and that was how they ended their day in the Pearl River Delta. They hoped that
their mother would be proud of them.
