New tales of the Gobi Desert
Suzhou Singapore International School, Lin Min Soh, Fiction: Group 3
I
am a dinosaur bone. I have lived in a dinosaur till it became extinct and then I lived
underground under the sandy ground of the Gobi Desert after the rest of the parts of the
dinosaur became decomposed. A man thought that I was some ancient coin and picked me
up as part of me was sticking out of the sand but I am much more worthwhile than some
coin. Anyways, that was the first time I came out of the blackish surroundings of mine who
could only offer sand. How boring! But the first time I saw the world, I gasped in wonder. I did
not expect that it would be so breath taking, I thought the Gobi Desert would just be a large pile
of sand like every other. I was amazed. I really hoped that my buddies would join me above the
golden colored sand sparkling when the sunlight is shone on it. But still this is a rare opportunity.
Maybe I’m the lucky one. Hopefully, I would get some attention from some explorers and be the
next big thing in the museum.
To my surprise, when I turned around, I was face to face with a marbled polecat. I was
stunned, not daring to breathe. Was it going to bury me back into the sand? I hope not. Instead,
it brought me away from where I was and brought me somewhere else. It was a cave with much
more polecats awaiting me. One came forward and picked me up and sniffed me. That was
probably their way of saying hello. They were much more friendlier than I thought they would be.
I grinned from ear to ear. But they did not take much notice to it because of their weak eyesight.
To my surprise, one of them gnawed on me. How rude! My grin faded, replacing it was a furious
frown. It dropped me and immediately backed away. “Ouch!” I grimaced in pain. That was not how
the ending was supposed to be. I rubbed my back gently. I stretched myself.
“Zoom!” the sound happened to scare all of the marbled polecats away. Taking me with them.
That car-like sound must have scared them. What babies. They ran as fast as the wind, leaving
prints behind them as they ran. Where were they going? Soon, I reached into another cave.
Instantly they dropped me on the ground. “Stop doing that! It hurts you know!” I scream in rage.
How could they not understand the meaning of pain? Shriek! Grunt! They produced sounds that
even I could not understand. After all, I did not understand marbled polecat language. I only
spoke another language. They probably did not understand me either. I folded my arms and sat
at a corner. Seeing how they had laughed with each other, my anger faded. My anger turned into
homesickness. I stood up and sneaked out of the cave. No matter how found the scenery beautiful,
I was not able to find my way back. I panicked. Should I go towards the north direction? South?
What about east and west? I was obviously at a loss.
Far off, I saw a rapid turning thing heading my way. It struck me, sandstorm! I reached out
my hands and started digging as fast as I could. But it was too late. I was caught in the sandstorm.
It’s a nightmare! I immediately felt dizzy and giddy from all that turning. “When is it going to
stop?” I screamed in terror. Till the volume of my voice started going down and the sound of the
sandstorm overran my voice. Besides, sand was flying into my mouth in huge amounts, I could
barely speak anymore. The sandstorm was wiping up whatever blocked their way.
When it has finally stopped, I laid on the ground. How happy I was to be back onto the
ground. I had an urge to throw up. “Burp!” I instantly felt better. But I obviously have much
bigger problems than throwing up. I was probably even further away from my friends. I am not
