Fiction: Group 2
“Here it is: ‘On the night the moon glows blue, when the twelve stars of wiseness shine the brightest, when
all the owls howl like wolves, the holy brother of wisdom must fly to the moon and make a wish. That wish
will come true but the holy brother of wisdom will disappear into the underworld forever.’”
“Holy brother of wisdom…” Delta muttered. “That must mean me! Sorry, Vienna, I simply must go!” The
holy bird raced out of the cave. Tonight the moon will glow blue and the stars will shine. He had no time
to waste.
Delta raced back to his village as fast as lightening. He still had two hours until the moon will rise. By the
time he reached the villages, he only had one hour left. Suddenly, he thought of something in that old
saying. He didn’t realise what it had meant before. He would disappear. Forever.
He felt the hot tears streaming down his feathery face. Of course, he didn’t want to leave all the relatives and
friends that he loved who loved him so dearly. With thirty minutes left, he had to decide; the death of all
the citizens or the death of just himself.
“Choose.” He muttered to himself.
Delta imagined his sister’s astonished and hopeless expression when she was told that he was gone. He
imagined how mad Vienna would be when she realised that she was the one who told him the old saying in
the first place. Right at that moment, all was dark as the blue moon rose from the horizon, all twelve stars
shined their brightest as the holy bird listened to the owls howl like wolves.
“It’s now or never” he thought to himself. So, Delta closed his eyes and made his wish. In a flash, something
shining, something long and flowing appeared in the land below. Yes, he had wished for a river.
That night, all the citizens in that village celebrated. They watched the pearl like stars shine. Meanwhile,
Delta had already turned into the water of the river and his spirit was making its way into the underworld.
To thank the holy bird for sacrificing himself for all his men, the villagers decided to name the river after
him and the pearl like stars. They named it ‘The Pearl River Delta’.
