How the Pearl River Delta got its name: A Myth
Discovery Mind Primary School, Li, Mina - 9, Fiction: Group 2
long, long time ago in China lived a phoenix, a panda, a tiger and a panther. The pheonix’s name
was Melody, who was the youngest in the family. The panda was called Vanessa, who was Melody’s
elder sister. She strolled in bamboo forests, in search of a tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner. She gave
the wood to Melody to make fires. Gabriella was the tiger’s name. She was the mother. She prowled around
the country, sharpening her eyes for a meal to eat with her husband. The panther was named Tom, who
was the father. He worked on boats every Wednesday, except the holiday on Wednesdays.
It was a windy Wednesday. That meant that Tom the panther had to go to work. Vanessa went out for a
meal while Melody gathered stones to surround the fire. Mother Gabriella went to find food to share with
father Tom. After a few minutes, Mother and Vanessa approached and Melody was puzzled “Where is
father?” He usually came back with them. Vanessa covered her eyes and rolled away. Melody made a face as
she trailed along. Vanessa took her to the bridge of river Delta. This was where father sailed across before he
broke into the open space. There, they saw a ship. It was crowded with fathers, but there was no sign of
father Tom. They asked a decent-looking Cat where he was. He replied that he had been ship wrecked on
an island because the wind was too strong before they passed the miserable girls. Melody let floods of drops
of fire land into the river. The fire turned into smoke and the smoke turned into a pearl. It put a flashing
light on and flickered all the way to father Tom and the other workers. It did one more flash before it
transformed into a ferry.
The workers grinned at each other, before they leapt on. Back at the bridge, Vanessa insisted they should
go. They just missed the ferry as it bobbed along. As father Tom strode home he went through his
adventure and told everyone it when he got there and that is how the Pearl River Delta got its name.
