ored, Wei, the ten year old Hong Kong girl, looked at a temple in Shenzhen. The temple was called
Chiwan Tianhou Temple or Mazu Temple, which lies beside Chiwan Village in Nanshan District.
That was all she knew. She didn’t want to know more about the temple.
“I don’t want to go to this boring temple!” the schoolgirl yelled.
“But Wei, you should learn more about mainland China,” her parents told her. “Take at least fifteen
pictures, Wei. If you don’t, you must take thirty pictures on your next family trip; if you take more than
fifteen, then I will give you some reward.”
Wei knew that she didn’t want to take thirty pictures, but her parents’ reward were always sweet.
She tried to take more than fifteen pictures, thinking about the rewards.
The young girl tried to take the pictures so they would look wonderful, but they never seemed to
turn out well. On her fifteenth picture, it took her a very long time to take it.
“Wei?” a lady called her.
“Just wait a sec; I am taking a picture…”
When she was done, she turned around and nobody was there. The lady was not her mother; she
was another mother with a daughter named Wei.
“Am I lost?” she asked herself.
Worried, she started to wander around the temple. Then. the curious girl went out of the temple,
now running around the city. She noticed that the city was awful; it was dirty. She also thought China was
impolite. She was also bumped into someone. She thought China was a very old-style city.
“Why do they spit on the streets? the Hong Kong native complained. Do they ever take a bath?
They don’t apologize either! How rude! How can I survive in this city?”
Walking around, Wei finally found a small store. There, she found some instant noodles and a
bottle of water. As she ate, she decided to go to the police station quickly so she will meet her parents by the
evening. After she finished, she went to the police station as speedily as she could. Wei told the policeman
that she was lost and she couldn’t find her parents. Then they told her to return to the police station at 6
p.m. As she went out, she jumped joyfully. There were some possibilities that she would get out of this city!
She expected the conversation should go like this:
“Wei! Are you OK?”
“Yes, I am…”
“Wei! Oh this city is so terrible because it is the city where one of my worst fears has taken place.
Let’s get out of this city!”
The girl skipped happily all over the city and didn’t care that passers-by looked strangely at her.
But as she skipped along, she saw a station; not a police station; it was a subway station. She didn’t know
that there was a subway station in Shenzhen. She didn’t need to go inside the station, but curiously, she
went inside. When Wei went in and looked, she gasped and saw the clean subway station of Shenzhen. She
took another picture.
“Well, I didn’t know that the subway station would be the first good thing I see in Shenzhen, she
realized. Oh, I should not waste time.”
The schoolgirl walked and walked until she was tired, hungry, and thirsty. So, she sat down for a
while, looking at her empty bottle. She threw it away so she wouldn’t carry it anymore. Then she noticed
that there was a restaurant in front of her. She ran to the door and opened it. A waiter said, “Welcome!
How many people are with you?”
“Only me,” she told them.
He was surprised. “Where is your family?”
“I am lost and I only have a little bit of mon-“
“It’s okay. We will give you a free dinner.”
“REALLY?” Wei was surprised. ‘These people are nice!’ she thought. ‘I love this delicious food!’ She
especially liked dim sum, a kind of Chinese dumpling. She told them, “I will try to come back tomorrow!”
But as Wei exited the restaurant, she noticed it was 5:50. She had to return to the police station.
Hurrying, she ran to the police station and just as she hoped, she met her parents there. However, the
conversation sounded a little differently than what Jane has expected:
