Fiction: Group 2
Jik-Fei headed toward the harbour. Sure enough, there was a house. She peeked through the window and
the beggar was inside, holding the Pearl up. The beggar took off her hoody and Jik-Fei immediately
recognized her, OI-MING! She had been Jik-Fei’s amah. She charged a lot of money to Jik-Fei’s father
for nursing her when she was a baby. Jik-Fei could not believe her eyes. She remembered Oi-Ming was
greedy, that was why she wanted the Pearl so badly. The Pearl somehow felt Jik-Fei was nearby because it
floated and headed for the window until it landed in Jik-Fei’s hands. Oi-Ming felt guilty and ran away
from the Village, and was not seen again.
Jik-Fei decided to devote her life to help mostly the poor, with the Golden Pearl. The Pearl had come to
her because she was caring and kind. Her father became a carpenter and helped her too. Her dear friend
Suk-Waa, also worked with her. Together they helped people rebuild their homes after the Typhoon. The
Hong Kong Flu hit in 1968. Jik-Fei volunteered in the Queen Mary Hospital as a nurse and helped many
people, until she too got the Flu and passed away during her peaceful sleep. She was only 40 years old. The
Golden Pearl was passed on to Suk-Waa and Jik-Fei’s father. Together they took over Jik-Fei’s place to
help people in need.
