n a faraway school, there was a boy called Zach. Zach enjoyed digging and building things, and he was
quite good at it too. He was aged nine and was in a class with an awesome teacher who did many fun
projects. This time, the class had to find out a story of how the Pearl River Delta was formed. Zach
paired up with his best friend James. James was also a digging and building lover.
He found one story that was about lots of pearls in the Pearl River Delta. As a result, they bought some
pearls from the jewellery shop. When Zach first looked at the pearls, he saw that one of the pearls was not
ordinary but a shiny blue colour. James accidently dropped the pearl on the floor, and to stop that from
happening again, they put it in a shell, Zach kept the shell in his pocket.
One day, while he was walking, the pearl rattled in the shell five times and the pearl became very bright. In
a flash of light, Zach and James found themselves standing at the back of an unhappy digging crowd.
“What in the world is going on?” Zach thought.
They soon found out that they were back long long ago in a wonderful place that everybody called “The
land of Pearls’’ or “Pearl Land’’. In that place, there were millions or even billions of huge and tiny pearls in
shells. Each year, lots of people went there to dig all sorts of pearls. At first, the villagers living there were
very happy because they could earn money by digging pearls and it was easy work to do. But now, good
pearls were very hard to find.
Everyone was chasing after quality pearls. A mining company discovered that there was a pearl deep
underground. The pearl was larger than any other pearl known in history. The company was determined to
dig out the big pearl. It was looking for the best experts. Zach and James wrote a letter to the chief of the
mining company to join the company because they wanted to see the enormous pearl.
Very soon, the mining chief was amazed by the skills of Zach and James, so he hired them immediately.
Zach and James were chosen to lead the mission. Firstly, they had to make a special machine that could see
very deep underground. James created the special machine and saw a big shell. The big pearl was actually in
the big shell and the shell was different from other shells because it lived underground. Now, they had to dig
out the shell instead of the pearl! After finding out about the big shell and the big pearl, the digging started.
But no matter how hard they dug, the shell did not come out. Zach and James planned to dig long canals
from the sea to the pearl. The shell would be flooded with water. The water then might push the shell out!
They thought this was a brilliant idea because shells normally like water.
The plan was an excellent idea and it worked! The shell was out! The next step was to drill through the big,
hard shell and get the pearl out. After lots of hard work, the pearl was out of the shell!
The pearl was magical. It suddenly flashed brightly and the land started plummeting down. Zach and James
had to escape from the sinking land and go back to their hometown in the future. In order to do this, they
had to find the shiny blue pearl and shake it five times in a shell.
Zach remembered he put the pearl in his pocket, but his pocket was completely empty! They raced to the
jewellery shops, but the shopkeepers shouted at them “Go! The land is sinking!!” Zach and James sprinted
from one shop to another until the last one. “That is the special shiny blue pearl”. James said, picking up a
pearl. Quickly, he put it in a shell, and shook it five times. “Hurry up! The land is sinking faster and faster!”
Zach snapped.
Finally, the pearl glowed brightly like last time and in a flash of light, they saw the land sinking. A
mysterious and strange shape of sea appeared. “This is the shape of Pearl River Delta!” they both exclaimed,
